One of our songs has a speech sample from Big Wednesday. As I progress along the long and painful journey of getting some tracks onto iTunes, the people I'm using picked out the sample and asked for copyright clearance.
Bit of Googling later and it seems Warner Bros have the rights. I sent off an email asking for clearance, and received this reply. As a letter attached to an email, rather than just an email:
"Please be advised, although we appreciate your interest in our motion picture property, company policy prohibits the release of our material for use in songs and we do not wish to make an exception in this instance.
Thank you for your interest in our motion picture and I am sorry we are unable to be of assistance."
So there you go. Don't bother trying to get clearance on anything owned by Warner Bros Ltd.

Well, that did cross my mind. More that they have a 'company policy' ie they don't even want to think about it.
I was a bit miffed that films use music all the time, and most of them would be crappier without it, but we can't use film clips in our music.
I suspect John Milius would approve. Especially the quote that was used: "Stuff it, Lifeguaaaarrrrdd!"

I'm thinking you'd need a legal eagle to make the request for you ie they would create a contract for the specific sample and you ie would pay, probably handsomely for the use of the sample. Ain't no big company givin it away.

I'm not sure I have any acting buddies! Are you offering your services?

No me neither. I did consider doing it myself but not for very long.
I'll probably just cut it off the start. Those that bought the CD get a little extra treat.
I thought it prudent not to discuss their logo...

Just to clarify, when a song is used in a movie the rights are paid for. Most corporations have a blanket NO! policy to keep it simple. WB does not want to make an exception, which may set a precedent. Giving up control is a big deal to them. Do they have to pay actors, writers or any one else if the allow commercial use? As they say in Hollywood it's complicated.

I texted a friend.. He said voice over.
I guess that means recording over the top of the original - with practice, patience and mixing the wave file should be come unrecognisable to detection.
I know this is going sound nutty but have you ever noticed how your voice changes when wearing a full face crash helmet. Sort of sounds like an old radio broadcast.
