Los Twang! Marvels

The Obsidians! (Ottawa surf)
The Obsidians debut EP

I'd have to say The Nebulas and The Bitch Boys are at the top of my list.

I'm taking notes, for the future,
And some listed are coming to the convention in 2017.

My current short-list...

1) Bambi Molesters
2) Satan's Pilgrims
3) Slacktone
4) The Thunderchiefs
5) The Volcanos

The Volcanos

Their "Surf Quake" album contains more of my favorite songs than any other Third Wave surf album I've heard so far. I wish I had been able to see their live show.

The Hula Hounds (1996-2000)

The Surge! (2004, 2011-2012)
Various non-surf bands that actually made money
(1978-1990)

Woody,

I literally just received a copy of "Surf Quake" in the mail yesterday. So good! Your comment makes me wonder if they have hung up the surf guitars as a band? Damn sure hope not! If so, I'll need to revise my list. Cry

I've asked the Volcanos to play.
They don't have a drummer, I was told.

Why do drummers always have to ruin a good thing? If The Volcanos have a keen interest in playing the convention, and lack of drummer is the only thing stopping them, I might be able to lend a hand. Although I'm sure they would prefer two hands, which might also be arranged.

murph,

I'm not sure The Volcanos are still active. Up to a year or two ago they were doing some car show gigs in the Detroit area. I believe one of the shows was a biggie - the Detroit Autorama. One of the Volcanos guitarists, Rick Mills, used to post occasionally on SG101 but I haven't seen him on here in quite a while.

According to the SG101 band database they formed in 1994 and the SurfQuake album was released in 1996. They have a Facebook site but the last post was in February 2015.

In any event, right now I would gladly travel to see them play!

Ha! this is summed up my band problem right now, we even have finished our recording session without have a drummer as a member of the band. Back to the topic, I really want to watch Burt Rocket performing his last album live

The Volcanos are unfortunately pretty dormant. I've been fortunate to seem them 5 or 6 times over the years. They played out recently with a great young kid on drums in June of 2014 at the Madeira's release party for "Sonic Cataclysm" (and before that in December '13 in Indianapolis as well). I have since heard that drummer is no longer available. The band also has enough songs for another full length release, and at one time they were thinking about trying to get that recorded and released so they could play at a SG101 convention. Sadly I don't think that is going to happen for a while.

In any event, yes you simply must own everything they've created: a slew of 45s and 2 full lengths, Surf Quake and Finish Line Fever... true masterpieces of the 90's revival era. I LOVE THAT BAND!

Thanks for all the info guys! Hopefully they will live to surf another day. I second Brian's recommendation to track down everything they have released... killer arrangements and playing all around.

I'd love to see the Torquays play again.
Thankfully I saw them hundred plus times,
Last time being a reunion for the Baja Marty benefit show.

This is one of the best topics for a very long time IMO.
And to satisfy your demands a little bit I've decided to go over each post on here in my show 'Ten Tons of Wet' on North Sea Surf Radio
Every band mentioned here gets a spin! Thanks for the great input and if you are interested, please feel free to tune in on Saturday, 11:00 PM CET. Cheers.

Is this the same "Murph" as the drummer from Dinosaur Jr?

Hey guys,
I haven't been around for a while. Murph made me aware of this thread.
Thanks for all the kind words regarding The Volcanos!
Yeah, we have been inactive for a little while now. The aforementioned drummerless situation. Don't know how soon that will change. I'd love to get the band back in action at some point.
Thanks again!
