I've got a surf green strat 50s classic strat that I'm thinking of taking out of retirement and upgrading with new PUPs and a steel block...
I'm not totally decided about the colour (so why did I get it? not a bad question, really, can't say I mind the colour, just not crazy about it)
Is anybody crazy about surf green guitars?
Just curious...

I like Sea Foam Green over Surf Green, but it is still a cool color.

Nice Jag...
What I like about surf green is that it's kind of a 50s diner colour... good summer colour... but not a colour I see myself playing in dark smoky bars late at night... and, well, is it manly enough?

FABULOUUUUUS!
My strat is green. Not surf green or seafoam green. Not sure of the official color name, but it's pretty.

it all depends on the context. for surf music the color is very appropriate and manly. But if you were playing blues or classic rock it would look wimpy. it also depends on the look of the band.

is this the strat we were discussing at the caddy last saturday? I'm the same with you, not crazy about surf green, but not opposed.

I would never buy a surf green guitar or bass. but if I won one, or someone gave me one, I wouldn't get rid of it.

I look at that wall o' Jazzmasters wallpaper lineup and have "option anxiety". So many colors, so little money. I love 'em all and that's what makes choosing and dreaming so much fun. I do think surf green is cool.
As for the "manly" question, well . . . I love shell pink, so I guess that sort of disqualifies me from giving an opinion on that.

I have an old strat (actually just a neck and a hacked-up body - needs a lot of work!) that I'm going to paint either Surf Green or Seafoam Green when it's done. Ocean Turquoise is cool too.

Ya know, I keep telling myself that my favorite custom colors in order of preference are fiesta red, then surf green, then daphne/sonic blue, then olympic white. But when the it came time to pull the trigger, I went Olympic white for my jag
However on someone elses guitar, surf green is da bomb! I mean c'mon. Have you ever seen a better promo shot than that green jag in front of the Greverb amp on DGG's website. Crimminy! What a freakin gorgeous pic!

I always felt that way too... BUt the more I play surf the more I'm liking the "surf" colours... Hey, I even don't mind Rickenbackers' Blue Boy (baby blue) colour now.
Hey Rio, maybe my next bass should be a "surf" colour different than yours... We could either do the complimentary colour thing - or a complete clash! smirk

I love surf green and if you have a guitar with that color you are very lucky.
Also if you're planning to get new pickups, I'd strongly recommend the California 50's set. They were made specificaly for surf music. You can get it at www.musiciansfriend.com

on my computer screen that looks completely like sonic blue => my computer is f'ed up I suppose. I like those kinda colors on strats, esp with the rosewood fingerboard.

Yup, I have a Sky Blue pair of Strats (one in RW and the other in Maple). When Fender issued that color back in 2002 I bought the RW new and then a year later bought the Maple off eBay from a private seller here in LA. Those Strats are now super rare to find IMO. I dig pastels.
