Every so often certain statements pop up by traditionalists that look down their noses at fast, flashy solos or even just fast flashy licks in modern surf music, saying it's just all the influence of metal. While certainly metal did influence quite a few of us, and probably made some of us play faster on occasion than we otherwise would have, I do think it's important to set the record straight with first wave surf music, which definitely had some pretty flashy, even what today we would think of as 'shredder' style guitar playing. Below are several exhibits in support of this claim. Enjoy! And feel free to add to this list!
(I'm going to skip in this round various fast, virtuoso solos by Nokie Edwards and the guy he influenced a great deal, Takeshi Terauchi, a pretty nimble-fingered guitarist himself.)

And the shred aspects of surf just spotlights the diversity and stereotyping of what surf instro is. When I hear surf tremolo/speed alternate picking I think Spanish classical and mandolin tremolo picking, along with bluegrass and blues.
And somehow, my ear links this all back to my musical formative years listening to groups like Iron Maiden...then I think, 'hey, The Trooper' would make a great cover!...then I wonder if has ever been done before...yup!

I've always thought of this as harder-than-average playing for surf and it has an appropriately amped up guitar tone to boot:

Holy crap...I would dare say they play this at a slightly faster clip than Maiden did! This is rad! Yes I used the word 'rad'.
