Here's an interesting website that shows the most common chord progressions and how many HUNDREDS of songs out there that use them.
It's fun to scroll through - check it out!

Secondary dominant is a really neat XVIII c. innovation that can help take your tunes to new places!

These days, it all comes down to the same 2 notes in every song:

Thanks for the post- I've been wondering if this was being recognized as a 'thing'. I first really noticed it in some early Paramour songs. A plague. I regularly scan 2 alt rock stations on the Sirius radio. Just to see if there is something approaching a melody. Absolutely dismal. No way could I check current Top 40.

I posted a link on the Millennial Whoop on another forum and it was largely ignored. I think I may have stepped on some toes I noticed it a couple of years ago, and absolutely hate it!
I commented on this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNFVivUa1K0

Ugh, the dreaded Millenial Whoop. I commented on the recently popular "Pirate Chorus" (cf. Bastille, "Pompeii") and a few prior vocal melody trends that have thankfully receded into obscurity.

Back to the topic of chord progressions....
I just work out the melody and the chords take care of themselves. Could care less if they match Crocodile Rock or the Blitzkrieg Bop.
