vulture
this is for the talent quest and i dont really want anyone to get bored.
i have no backing music either
Vulture, since you have no backing band and will be playing on your own, I thgink your best bet is not to show of your surf guitar skills, but to make it sound as music as much as possible. i.e. choose songs in which you can play chords and melady and a tad of rhythm all in one.
secondly, choose at least some stuff people will reconize. Not only better chance at succes to begin with, but also, the minds of the listeners will "fill in the blanks" of what they dont hear but expect to hear because they know the song. that's just how the brain works.
but of course you'll want to throw in some "real" surf stuff....
I'd say you'd have to throw in at least part of miserlou, surfrider, and the pipeline lick. I do a bit of slaughter solo as well. I cant really make the other songs work well on my own, but Im not that brilliant either so you might have better succes.
I say start with a miserlou intro, double picked with strong accents low E, the glissando, the first part, and see if you can play chords along. .... the Am part will work well too, just slam the chord on the 1 .... end with the classic pipeline lick, expand and pimp it a bit.... then transition to surf rider, goes easily, perhaps even with the chromatic run up to A form miserlou ..... surfrider goes in chords easily..... same with slaughter, however, you need to make transition from Am to D.... throw some wammied chords in to make the modulation...
best of all though, wear a nice shirt and make sure you're presentation is great, do some steps, hold your guitar up, look at the audience and work that wiggle stick - they'll eat you up!
