Permalink Randy Holden at SG101 Convention

New Topic

I had the good fortune in the mid 60's to see Randy Holden perform with the Fender IV, who became the Sons of Adam. Jac Ttanna (formerly Joe Kooken) was the rhythm guitarist for both bands & Michael Stuart, who was the drummer for the SOA, later played drums on Love's "Da Capo" & "Forever Changes" albums.
Seeing Randy & Jac onstage again took me back in time more than 50 years to Darby Park near Inglewood, where I first heard MarGaya. I was hoping Randy & Jac would have thrown a curve at the audience by playing SOA's version of Mister You're A Better Man Than I. Maybe next time they get together. Carl Belknap (drummer for the original Eliminators & Glass)

You are sooooo lucky!!!

Hello Carl,

It was good to meet and talk to you at the convention.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Having Randy and Jac play at the SG101 was tremendous!!! Randy's grin showed real pleasure and appreciation. there's nothing like hearing a song direct from it's source.

I'm really hoping this is going to spark something. Too good for a one-off that only us surf nerds get to see

Wow, Carl, this has to be a great memory. Did you get a chance to talk to Randy about that ol' Inglewood performance and if so, what were his comments? Did he remember playing Darby Park? -Marty

Does anybody know if Randy tuned his guitar down to D for this show, as he says he used to do back in the '60s?

He def. uses a drop D on the above clips. (I'm not quite sure if that is what you meant? Smile )

That was great! Thank you!

Matt Quilter told me they were tuned to E flat at the convention.
I told Randy he's the reason I tune down to "D" Smile

Wow! That was great. Thanks for posting Ivan. It's like he stepped through a time warp from 1964. Is he doing surf gigs regularly, or was this a one-off just for the fun of it?

Strat-o-rama, Randy hasn't played surf music in 50 years! He actually said that on stage.

I had an exchange with Matt Quilter on FB yesterday about a lot of these things, and Matt was VERY helpful in clarifying all sorts of things - here it is, for the non-FB people:

Me: Matt, do you know if Randy tuned his guitar down to D, as he used to do in the '60s?

Matt: We were all in Eb. Randy claims that a lot of the original recordings were sped up, and that the SG101 set is closer to the original tempos. Listening to the orig Everybody Up!, I can believe it. Plus, us old guys can't play quite as fast as we used to (Dusty notwithstanding). Wink

Me: Interesting! Yes, I believe it about Everybody Up in particular. I'm surprised you didn't go down to D, though, like Randy says he used to do back in the day. Anyway, thank you, Matt!

Matt: I think Randy settled on Eb as a default tuning many years ago, rather than D. Good thing, as my instruments would not be happy in D! That Lucite Strat he played is punishing in any key, and contributed a lot to that low-end clarity. He has several Strats, but that one was the dog's bollocks for this outing.

Me: Thank you so much for that info, Matt! Do you know if that's an original '70s lucite Strat, or some sort of a reissue/replica? It must weigh a ton! I guess he uses it for the particularly powerful sound?

Matt: It has no logo on it. He said it was custom built for him, but not sure when. And, yes, it weighs a ton!

Me: Cool, thanks again!!!

I had a Lucite Strat that in a moment of madness I God rid of it about 15 years ago. Matt is absolutely right on the weight as mine weighed a ton! But siounded fantastic!
Edit: THe body was lucite but the neck was wood. No name on it.
REally enjoying this thread. thanks all for the info and video.

I am not obsolete, I am RETRO.... Cool

Thanks much, Ivan. That was very informative. I've looked at several of the videos now. Randy really still has it all. He knocked it out of the ballpark! It would be great if he would do more surf music gigs.
BTW, Kinda liked the Eb tuning.
