Permalink How to get that "whip" sound?

Commonly heard in Apache and other western type songs. Run your fingernail on a string?

Thx!

Pick scrape on roundwounds with echo.

Fingernail or the edge of a guitar pick.
If you were to use a guitar pick, the tone could vary ever-so-slightly, due to the thickness of the pick.
I've used both, at one time or another. I usually use a fingernail, though.

Calloused finger does it for me. Guitar needs to be at stage volume for this, fingernail and pick are too abrasive sounding to me with my ham fists.

Interesting. Somehow I thought it might have been some kind of studio or special effect. Maybe it is on some recordings I've heard.

That technique is clearly demonstrated in almost every Ventures video like Beloved Invaders etc ...they seem to just swipe the finger down the string

Saw a YouTube yesterday of the Ventures playing Apache and the guy used his pick to do it.

At the risk of upsetting a bunch of people, and for reasons I don't really understand, if I never heard this particular "effect" again, especially on Apache, it would be too soon. Sorry! Very Happy

The Ventures featuring Peter Frampton. Edwards whipping it up.

Some pretty convening "whip" at the :40 & 2:40 mark +/-
