I agree that if there is a difference in sound it is essentially negligible.
I think I'm in the "the strat is probably better but I find it uncomfortable to play" offset camp ;)
Would you recommend a similar setup for the downpicked rhythm? Middle pickup? My rhythm guitar player uses a strat and is working on getting the hang of what settings sound best per "kind" of rhythm.

For these songs specifically, or in general for rhythm use? For me the latter is middle pickup, hands-down. Mixed full-volume or just laid back, to my ear it's more breathy & full-bodied regardless of level and makes an outstanding choice for rhythm on a Strat. Just my $.02 but I'm not Ivan and don't play him on TV.
