Was it filmed in a real prison?

I once did some extra work in Cardiff prison, it was quite scary having all the prisoners shouting at you from their cell windows. Scarier for the women amongst us. But provided authentic background to our fight scene.

There was the time a former inmate for six years was an extra. He was hired to play a guard.

Yep! The former Greensburg Correctional Facility. It's been closed for 4 years, and gets used for filming about once a year. I expect real inmates would have provided better background than we did. Or maybe too much.

Here's a clue. The scene we were filming took place place in an Oregon maximum security Federal Penitentiary.

Also, I didn't look anywhere nearly as hardened as some of the other extras. And, there was a professional extra there named Fred, well-known to the crew, who appears regularly in The Outsiders.
