hello i just created a surf band and am creating a set list but could use some help. its a rock surf type band. we like to mix styles of southern rock metal blues and but it under the surf unbrella

our 1st song is Nitro by Dick Dale

Hi,

I'm not really in a position to give advice as I'm a comparative novice who in playing terms hasn't ventured too far from the spare bedroom - but your post looked a little lonely here so these are songs that I like and can play recognisable (if simple) versions of (no particular surprises or lateral thinking here)- I'm sure you're aware of them all!

Ghost Riders
Apache
Wonderful Land
Foot Tapper
Runaway
Honky Tonk
Hide Away
Walk Don't Run
Penetration
Surf Rider
Mr Moto
Out of Limits
Bulldog
FBI

I guess just make a play list of the stuff you like and get a buzz out of?

Good luck with the band!

Wherever you go, there you are

Let's move into the "modern" era - basic stuff that the entire band can learn quick but sounds great live and you can put your own spin on each one.

Save the Waves - The Surfdusters
Calhoun Surf - Los Straitjackets
Bombora - The Original Surfaris
Mir Rescue - The Space Cossacks (not as simple as it sounds)

Older:
The Hearse - Al Casey
Let's Go (Pony) - The Routers

Hope that helps! Big Grin

Great kick butt way to open up a set and get the crowd rockin'. Look up the bands I think they may be good fits for your sound.

"Bells of St. Kahuna" - Slacktone.
I know this song gets me going when I hear it. Nitro is a great choice IMHO as it really rocks! ( Also my favorite DD song)

Guitar Groovy

Not surf, but Rumble or Ace of Spades by Link Wray have good over driven sounds to try and win over the metal masses. Pipeline and Miserlou are good choices if you want some high energy stuff that non surf fans will be familiar with.

here are the songs we have played so far after our inital meet up

misirlou
Taco Wagon
Mr Moto
Ghost Riders (DD Version)
Pipeline
MArty Stewert Theme

Was thinkin of adding slaughter on tenth avenue

Dude, Shadownight, I am one of those "metal" guys (my background was death and black metal before playing surf music), and I know if you throw enough attitude and tremolo picking in there, the metalheads will eat it up. And if they don't....well...don't fret about it. They're probably only into metal because it's "rebellious". True metal peeps like all sorts of music.

If you want some rockin' stuff to throw into your set, look at bands like Daikaiju, Satan's Pilgrims, Man or Astroman, and some of these other more modern bands, like a couple ArtS up there posted.

Jon & The Nightriders have some good rocking tunes as well ("Moving Target" is a great song to check out).

Hell, my band covers the surf version of "Transylvanian Hunger" that you can find on YouTube (I'm at work, otherwise I would post a link). I believe the surf version is called "Californian Hunger"? There's a few of those tunes, and a good way to bridge the gap, as it were.

Gear:Kit:Pearl Reference series in Emerald Fade,Pearl rack,Pearl Demon Drive pedals,Tama Iron Cobra hi-hat stand, Sabian & UFiP cymbals.

ooh i need to look into some of that

There are a lot of great suggestions here. That said, have you got any originals? I really prefer bands that play originals and obscure covers.

Bob

I have a hand full of originals

Here is one I did

I like it. Surf for sure.
