Permalink Seymour Duncan Jazzmaster pickups questions (Vintage/Antiquity I/II)

New Topic

Of the clips that I hear and reviews read, the Antiquity II imparts a sweeter, more articulate, brighter tone whereas the Ant I is more late 50s vintage mellow. All I know is that the Vintage models are cheaper.
So, in almost equal measure I see players loving the Ant IIs and those that find them much too bright.
And since I will be playing through a Fender reverb unit which imparts its own brightness to the sounds, the Ant I would be better candidate than the "perhaps already too bright Ant IIs".
Comments/Thoughts, please?

The vintage are plenty bright- I know- I have SJM-1s and I still have to keep rolling off on the tone when I find myself brighter than the rest of the band and I play with half-wounds. If you are concerned about being TOO bright with a reverb tank I'd say you are thinking along my own lines and may prefer the vintage. Anything more may find you in ice-pick-in-the-ears-zone. BUT, there is always that tone knob to fix everything as well as string and pick choice (and string freshness!). All just as important for tone. I think mulling over which exact model too much isn't worth it. Adjust accordingly.

I found the a2's too thin for me. Not necessarily too bright, but definitely missing something. As luck would have it, I stumbled across a set of jmascis pickups out of a stock squier and they are amazing. Full, clear, and plenty hot. Highly recommended, and since they're stock and out of a "lesser" guitar (which certainly earns its keep in its own right) can be found really cheap.

Thanks, Jetpack and Chipper -
More info from me:
I am in a bit of a conundrum and not sure of my course of action - advice is welcome:
This is for my Classic Player JM (strung with TI flatwound '12s') that I find the pickups to be a bit too flat and beefy for clean guitar tones (i.e. not chimey enough, although I definitely do not want brittle spikeyness). Very good for rocking-out with my non-surf cover band but I want to gear this towards more trad surf.
For the pittance I could get for the CP pickups, I will keep them in case of a future need or I give up on surf (HAHAHAHAHAHA...yeah, not likely...)

In the past week, based solely on local (actually, national!) availability, I picked up a SD Vintage Bridge and an Antiquity I neck.
SD Vintage neck pickups were available but I jumped at the Antiquity I as it was my first choice (I would be happy with Antiquity I in both neck and bridge but the bridge unit is not available here)

The output of the Vintage bridge seemed to be a bit higher than the Antiquity I neck but I think this could be a good blend esp. with some slight height tweaks in each of the pickups).
I have the option of returning either one (or both) of these pickups as it is a national retailer with a 30-day no dicker return policy and I am in very good standing with the staff there, too.

If my history knowledge is correct, the '59-ish sounding pickups would be closer to the classic first-wave players as this is the variation that they would have been using pre-CBS. I am surmising that with the downturn in surf music and the move to amps with integrated reverb tanks, a chimey-er pickup would have been appropriate, ergo, a brighter '65 pickup (but who am I to figure out CBS's business decisions, hey?).

If the Antiquity I bridge is the way to go, I will order one from Darren Riley along with some witch hat knobs.
If the SD Vintage bridge will work ok for me, then I will rest with what I have. Just second-guessing myself.

Sidebar: I recently bought Pure Vintage '65s for my CP Jag due to the solid recommendations here on the forum. I am no stranger to wiring-up entire pickguards of new pickup assemblies for Strats, etc. but I usually stick with stock value caps and pots. Getting into different values of caps and pots is fine but I really have no expertise in what I should be striving for in different values.

In the FWIW department just for a data-point I have a Fender Pure Vintage set on JM (which started life as a Squier VM, just the body now). I really like them & think Fender did a great job on these. I typically run things wide-open and (because of the commensurate change in resistance) can darken it up slightly just rolling the vol knob back to 9 or so. But at 10 they are wonderful, exactly what you expect a good JM to sound like imo. I don't think CBS at the point of '65 was yet neck deep into mucking with stuff (and indeed they didn't screw with everything, some things cosmetics only). I believe the "Pure Vintage" are now what were previously those found on the AVRI '65 series (could be wrong). But they're very very nice. Just my $.02.

Between the Duncan offerings, the Fender PV'65s, Novaks, I am taking the route of ordering an Antiquity I bridge to go along with the Ant I neck I just bought. I will return the SD Vintage bridge. I have had good fortune with SD pickups since I wired my first after-market pickup circa '87.
The Ant I still seems to have a vintage clarity but a "rounder" sound (I would say 'mellower' than 'darker').
If I could just have easily picked up a set of PV'65s I would go that route. Not sure what it's like in the US but JM and Jag pickups are not easily sourced at brick and mortar stores.

Some vids that helped me get here...

Check out Don Mare and Curtis Novak too. I had a set of antiquities (p90) and thought they were pretty good.
