Permalink Any surf/instro bands from Hawaii....besides us!!

New Topic

The TakeOffs (and others) were wondering if there were any other surf/instro bands/fans from Hawaii. There was a band called The Telstars from the Big Island a long time ago and they had a single called "Spaghetti Strap" but we haven't heard of any other bands. We would like to go to some of the other Islands and play so we're trying to make contacts if any.

Ron, there was a guy on sg101 awhile back in a band on the Big Island.
If I recall correctly they were called Solar Wind, (I'm assuming very hippy inspired) and I recall reading about 1 or 2 on Oahu, and maybe 1 on Maui, but I can't recall names. Maybe try posting in the (tiki music) area of the forums on www.tikicentral.com
Good luck sir.
how was the ole' Chongolio?

Thanks guys.......Randy (Chongolio) said he was discussing this with BTD and he got me wondering too but.......i'm afraid we're marooned by our lonesome! Oh well, there's worse places to be marooned i guess!! As far as we can tell.....there's no surf music scene here in the Islands.....Jeff, remember telling me "good luck starting a surf music scene on sleepy Kauai" well, you were right.....! We're having a hard time getting people to come to our shows.......but the ones that do....love the band. I've contacted surf shops....promotors......the Surfrider Foundation etc. but the music of choice right now is reggae/jawaiian and when there's a surf contest or awards show or whatever they use reggae bands which means we need to work harder and we need a "hit" song on the radio!! So i better get back to work writing that "hit" and stop whinning!!!

Ron, if you guys are getting gigs and still putting your music out there, I say just stay with it and keep the faith. You might even be the spark that ignites a resurgence of surf music in the islands!! BTW, where can I hear some of your music???

May the surf be with you...

Maybe try to play some parks or shopping malls, maybe even for free.
If you are playing a gig with one of your other band, put on some surf tunes over the PA while you guys are taking a break.

I know nothing about them, but here is the webpage for Solar Wind.

ToneBoy....yeah we're not going anywhere and it would be really cool if we inspired another band...you can hear some of our music at:
http://www.myspace.com/thetakeoffs
Jeff....we do every gig we can....paid or not.....it's not about money for us and we played last Saturday in a small cafe on the Eastside (where we met Chongolio) for FREE....we've played at beach parks for FREE....we just want to play and be heard.....like every other band here. Our bass player,John Hunt, has a sound company and does a lot of events here and ALWAYS plays surf music in between acts. I guess we're gonna play at Shaka Tacos in Kapa'a soon and that's a freebie too but, right on the main hiway in an open air venue so were hoping to get some decent exposure(and maybe a few tacos!!) there. Our problem is.....surf music fans that come here on vacation have a great time at our shows but they're gone in a week or two and we're forgotten, although we have gotten photos from tourists including the one i use for my signature here. I don't know.....have any of you guys done a gig where you thought you were just shredding and when you look around there's maybe 4 or 5 people.....jeez that's so frustrating....and i'm not used to that. I played reggae for 30 some years going back to the early 70's and it was NOT a popular kind of music, untill now, but i'm one of those guys who's not interested in doing what everybody else is doing so i wanted to do something that's not popular and try to make it popular. I've said this before here....my music collection is old school reggae and SURF!! Always has been, always will be, so i'm on a mission to make instrumental music popular here...i did it with reggae and i'll do it with surf...just watch!!
Tenderfoot....thanks for that link.....i'm gonna call those guys right now. I googled that name yesterday when Jeff mentioned it but came up empty so thank you and i'll let you know what comes of it.
Aloha you surf dogs,

http://www.surfmusic.com/ has seemingly every surf band website and location listed. I have no idea how they compiled it all.

Ron, I just checked out your myspace page and listened to some of your music. I must say I was impressed with what I heard. The light lyrical riffs your lead guitarist does are way cool and the supporting cast of instruments really compliment the style.

Best of luck to you guys!! You deserve it!!

Ron, we all sympathize. Crying

Let us know what techniques you have success with. I admire your fighting spirit, ultimately we all need a whole lot of that to make surf more popular.

Shocked OMG We have not forgotten!!! I listen to your CD's all the time. Just so you know. Wink

Aloha Ron and the Take Offs,
We are alive and well and jammin' on the Big Island!
Solar Wind is the name of the band. Big Tiki Dude called
my attention to your post, it's great to hear about you folks!
We play at the Longboard Contest in Kawaihae and at a Magic Show
in the Aloha Theater in Kona. We are working on some songs for a
Surfing DVD. Now heading in the direction of Original Tunes.
Drop me a line!

Aloha to All,

Kim

PS where did you hear about the Telstars? Do you have a copy of that record? I believe that was the old original group (1964) of John Keawe, a
slack key guitarist here on Hawaii.

First of all......mahalo to all of you for the help and kind words......Outsides...i'm sorry.....i got caught up in venting/frustration and i didn't mean you, or Ferenc, or Dick and Kay from The Primativos.....you guys are all in the business of surf music and your support and SG101's support MEANS EVERYTHING TO US and some times i get to flapping like a fish out of water and......well, anyway!! Tenderfoot...thanks for leading me to surfmusic.com....that is an amazing list of bands and i went thru every page looking for a Hawaiian connection and i did find Solar Wind in there along with Arthur Lyman (what?...Arthur Lyman?) and the all time classic Tiki/Lounge act Martin Denny......so, not much surf rock in Hawaii. As i was looking around the internet i also found Tiki Taboo an actual surf band(with reverb!!) from Oahu that has a CD for sale on CD Baby.com from 2004 so i e-mailed them and maybe we can hook up with them sometime. Actually there's quite a bit of really great instrumental music in Hawaii.....just not surf. Heck we thought all the surf contests and awards shows would want a surf band....and maybe they do....so we'll keep trying to hook up and get our name out there before we reach our "golden years"!!! Very Happy
Kim.....when i got home from my gig last night at 1:45am my wife Ronnie said you had called and that BTD was trying to connect us....cool. What's a good time to call you? I don't have any Telstars records(Outsides?) but i have a couple tunes on CD that i got from a local DJ here on Kauai and i think "Spaghetti Strap" is a great song....i know, there's not much too it and it almost sounds unfinished but i always liked that one......so maybe that's John Keawe? Wow!! i'll ask him about that.
ToneBoy......thanks for checking out our myspace....all the music on there was performed by me and except for "Only The Young", i wrote those songs too...they're just demo's for an eventual CD and i have a "production" studio(that means i don't have room for a drum set!!) at home so....anyway, thank you all and the MaiTai's are on me when you get here!! Cheers
Aloha,

Actually we've got two (Hawaiian) Telstars 45s' up for auction right now! Continental Mash / Stomp Happy and Toples / Spaghetti Strap. On the original Hawaiian "Teen" label. The auction closes June 25. But if you just want to hear them, PM me and we can work something out. Otherwise we are Golden Gate Records in the Music Merchants Links section. Aloha! Very Happy

-outsides-

Hey Outsides.....is there any info on the label that might be useful? Like songwriters, producer credits etc.

The TakeOffs

http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-TakeOffs/312866840587

The Teen label was out of Honolulu. Spagehetti Strap and Topless are credited to George Kimoto. Continental Mash and Stomp Happy are credited To George Kimoto and Herb Abe. That's about all the info on the labels besides stuff that wouldn't be very interesting to anyone but a fairly intense collector. (ie. delta numbers and blah blah blah)

I'm wishing I was in Kauai right about now. Sad

Mahalo......so.....two tickets to paradise? Window seats ok? The Super Ferry is starting up next month......now you'll be able to take your car to the outer Islands......3hrs to Oahu from Kauai.......that should be interesting during the winter swells Puke
