So I was at a record store today and ran across a clearance album from a Hungarian guy with a crazy picture of a guitar on the cover. It struck me as being extremely guitar geeky and son of course I picked it up. Later when listening to it I was blown away and researched the album. Ends up it was Farago 'Judy' István and his Album "Silver Guitar". There are some really excellent songs on the album and is well described as a mix of gypsy music with the Shadows. While I was researching this, I stumbled across what appears to be a very definitive historical record of the song we know as Dark Eyes here:

I searched for a record of this on sg101 but didn't find it. This was a fascinating read!

Very interesting read, Jeremy. Thanks. I think I read somewhere that Eddie Bertrand was especially proud of his recording of Dark Eyes.

Yeah he makes an interesting observation that the Ventures version was the precursor to Eddies version, and I suppose you can hear a similar intro. But Eddies version seems a lot meaner and more rocking comparatively.

My favorite version of this song is the Tornadoes' one (even though they mis-titled it). Even more energetic than the Showmen's version, I think. I especially dig the piano break and the drumming in this one.

I'm curious if this is actually the Tornadoes from Californa. To my ears the guitar tone is more european and usually they have a more honking sax style.
Great version either way!

I saw Roy Clark play several years ago, and he played a ripping version of Dark Eyes. It left me sweating.

It is, Danny. The (Hollywood) Tornadoes were one of very few US surf bands of the first wave that used an echo unit (the first Echoplex, I think - Wikipedia says "The first Echoplex with vacuum tubes was marketed in 1961", so that checks out) rather than reverb. I don't think they ever used reverb, actually, but I could be wrong about that.

Danny, this is the version from the "Bustin' Surfboards" album. The liner notes of the re-issue by Sundazed said the backstory of the echo sound was, that the band didn't have money for reverb units in the beginning, so they used tape echos for the early recording sessions. In fact the song "Bustin' Surfboards" also has echo, although more subtle and thus more similar to reverb.
