I've been watching musicians from both sides since I was young. Some people appear that it is really serious and never show much emotion. Some look so happy that you are caught up in their joy. Where do the average musicians fit in. In a band, I was always the serious type. I'm watching the KFJC battle of the bands and some are happy, some aren't. Should we show the magic of music while we play?

I think as long as "the magic" isn't some sort of euphemism for lord knows what... you're good. Picard Face Palm Picard Face Palm Picard Face Palm

Cool

I'm guessing I fall into the happy group. I'm not always happy on stage, as my band mates can attest, but when the gig is going well and I allow myself to relax and enjoy myself, it just comes out. Going well means my gear is working properly, I like the sound of my guitar, and there's a responsive crowd. I think what looks like serious faces is more people concentrating. We surf bands don't play often enough to feel like pros, so it's always a bit of a struggle.

I am focused.

I look like this much of the time. I would say the look is "committed" or should be committed.

Smile and play, trying not to looked creepy.

I was also watching the performance styles of the KFJC battle bands. I most enjoyed the groups that had energy, seemed to be having fun and looked at the audience from time to time, like Meshugga and Tomorrowmen. I quickly lost interest in bands that were so inwardly focused on their own playing and had no connection with the audience.

Much of the time while playing guitar?... or much of time in general?! Duh

I should have been committed years ago but surf has brought a sense of calm as is well depicted in the pic. Less vein bulge and facial contortion. Almost normal looking!

I'm such an amateur, I am usually in a deep concentration on stage. I try to smile and move around a little, but for me it doesn't come naturally.

I normally have a look of sheer terror on my face, apart from when I'm crying. Maybe I need to lighten up...
