Permalink Does anybody use effects pedals for surf bass?

What and why? Also looking for experiences and recommendations.

Thanks!

Our bass player uses a fuzz to accentuate the occasional bass lead line. Sounds awesome.

Just a Boss GEB-7 bass EQ and a MXR compressor for tone shaping. The GEB-7 is also useful for boosting the overall signal using its Level control.

The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005)
The Hula Hounds (1996-current)
The X-Rays (1997-2004)
The Surge! (2004, 2011-2012)
Various non-surf bands that actually made money
(1978-1990)

I like sometimes to use a very short delay and/or a small hint of reverb, makes the picking sound great when palm muted. The strymon flint e.g. works great.

2nd for the Boss EQ. I don't play bass, but my bass player friends do and it really can improve tone.

I do. Tends to just be a comp (Darkglass Super Symmetry) and maybe some overdive (B3K) or slight fuzz (GGG Green Russian clone)to emphasize certain parts. I play different styles outside of The Delstroyers, so there are other things on my pedalboard, but that is about all I use with this band.

I am a fan of "Anything Goes If It Sounds Good"

image This may be a little confusing. Firstly, I play in a psychedelic(ish) surf band which opens up the choices a bit. Secondly, I sometimes use use a Squire bass VI which is what most of these pedals are for. For my P bass I tend to use the Atomic Brain pre-amp on at all times, the Dan echo for short slap often, and the SPLASH quite a bit as it's the first reverb pedal I've found that REALLY works with a bass (it don't end up sounding like mud). I should point out that this is in the context of my band, SANDBLAST , which is a three piece. I likely would make other choices in a more complex band. Ignore the Hall of Fame reverb at the end. Good pedal for guitar. It was on there at the time of this pic for an experiment. No animals were harmed. Good luck!

Absolutely no! Smile

Just a cable.

But to tell the truth i had a strange time years ago when I tried all possible kinds of Pedals preamps and amps and stuff. I had the idea i would find the magic Sound that would make me perfect. But that never happened. Smile

Like I said now one good Amp a good Bass and a good cable. I am happy like never before.

Cheers jaque

I agree, good bass and amp hits the spot, every time.

A friend uses tremolo on bass, for slow, atmospheric sections.
Seems to work, really well.

I use Fuzz on one song.

I have an octave pedal that I use for one song, looking for some atmosphere. It isn't working like I hoped. I may try an envelope filter. I also have fuzz that I use for one song. That's about it.
