Permalink Link Wray AMP!

New Topic

I'm geeking out about Link Wray's gear as usual and trying to work out what he played on my favourite recordings, like Jack the Ripper, Ace of Spades, Deuces Wild etc,. The amp seems to be a Premier 71 and I've heard mention of a Fender Pro Reverb but I guess they appeared around 1964 so that may be a bit late.

Any clues about the amps on those historic recordings?

Ooooo, nobody knows!

Those who admit to knowing tend to never be heard from again. Think about it. You ever see this question addressed by Wikileaks? You ever hear the NSA or the CIA even MENTION the subject? Ever wonder why the Soviet Union collapsed? Why Roger Waters was forced out of Pink Floyd? This is serious stuff man.

Do us all a favor.... drop it while you still can.

Cool

That amp pictured above is very reminiscent of one I used to own, a 88N that had a separate ad and speaker cabinet that joined vertically with clasps and looked like a sewing machine case. It was so primitive, all flying leads and a field coil speaker, with an octal lead connector. Only place I ever read about it was in a web post that mentioned Michelle Shocked playing one, and a photo of Muddy Waters with one.
I suppose they were cheaper back in the day, but a mess under the hood.

Just had to chime in since you mentioned Michelle Shocked. In the mid-late 1980's I lived across the Hudson River from Manhattan, my brother was headed to St. Maarten and wanted some new clothes so I drove him into the city. That night while he shopped at Banana Republic on the Lower East Side I stayed in my in my pickup having a few smokes and listening to the sounds of Michelle Shocked drifting up to the street from the subway platform below. Yep I had my own private concert and the acoustics were incredible. I still love to listen to her "Short, Sharp, Shocked" CD.

I'm under the distinct impression that Rumble was recorded on a Tweed Tremolux. Can't remember where I got that from. It certainly sounds like the hypnotic slam you get from the 5G9 bias vary trem (combined with the grind you get when you dime that amp).

Link Wray told me personally that he used a Premier amp on Rumble.
I made a video demonstrating a Supro with built in electronic tremolo, and also the special tone control for the bridge pickup that cuts lows to give that distinctive Link Wray tone.

Thanks Dave,

The video is great!

That is really cool Dave, the onboard trem is fun. Always wondered how much the Premier 71 was used after Rumble, I guess it was on most of his recordings around that time and the Fender Pro Reverb would have come in later for gigs and studio work in the mid 60's.

Love the old Premier amp! Thumbs Up

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

Wow! You can't beat personal testimony - thanks Dave. That Supro guitar sounds cool. Nails it for me.

Here's a blurry picture when I met Link Wray. This was the night of his last performance.

Great to see that photo Dave. Seems like the Premier was used on most of them, just curious about the Fender pro suggestions around the web.

Hey Vince, I don't know about the Pro Amp. I think the Supro guitar is a very big part of his sound.
