If anyone would like to have a listen to the two tunes I wrote this rainy auckland week. quickly recorded demos for here them myself this morning.
Will be taking them to the rest of the boys for a tinker around with at our next practice.
please note they are VERY ROUGH takes, and obviously no drums yet.
I used my 64 jag and my 6g15 tank/ac14 miced and a 70s p bass DI into a focusrite interface.
No EQing or anything fancy, just raw.
Appreciate any suggestions/tips/critique
Thanks

I'll be brutally honest... I like them both! My favorite is Karnak Kings. I think you nailed "the tone" on it. Don't change a thing! Very traditional surf sound, like something you'd hear from the summer of '62. I love all eras of surf guitar, so it's all good to me. I wish I had your creativity man!

Both are really cool. I like the themes and melodies.
Very steeped in the traditional feel and sounds.
I might dig "Karnak Kings" a little more but....both are good to me.
Only suggestion since you asked - I could hear a more melodic element in the breakdown section 2/3's of the way through Karnak but once you get these tunes with the band I'm sure they'll take even more shape and finalize.
Great stuff!
More!
Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.
I agree with you there Jeff, I think its going to sort of draw back into a dreamy sort of feel there and it occured to me I should check some pulsating tremolo in there.
Once the guys have had a bash at them, they will likely change a lot you a re right.
Thanks

Anthony,
Thanks for posting, always like hearing new stuff. First love the guitar sounds, super traditional; I thought I was listening to the one of the "Lost Legends of Surf" tracks.

For Late Take Off - Very traditional arrangement with some nice implied stops/accents. I would suggest changing the melody line of the verse by maybe taking it up or down an octave the last verse and adding a bit more "flavoring" to create a bit more energy at the end.

Karnak Kings - This is also traditional, but I like the "Latin'ia" feel to it. When the band is working it out, suggest the drummer try a straight drum beat style, then maybe a more syncopated Bossa Nova like sound and see what works, or maybe use both. Placing the snare or rim shot accents a little differently in the beat (compared to traditional surf beat) could add some really nice feel to it, but the rhythm players will need to work in tandem.
Best of luck!!

Nice! My bias is for vintage-inspired tunes to be in that 2:00-2:30min sweetspot to lock onto a theme and have a bit of an excursion from that but not have too many change-ups. That is only my bias. I prefer 4 or 5 separate songs vs. having 2 that shoehorn-in too many elements.
So, on that note, I enjoyed the unusual themes in Late Take Off and, to my tastes, it could have been quite successful in paring it down to a 2:30min song without the "WipeOut"-type section...that could be another song entirely!
