Hi all
I'm finding the g string, and to a lesser extent the d string, is some what 'dead' co pared to the others. I've had the frets leveled, a luthier check the frets are well seated, altered the height of the string to sort out buzz as a factor and tried staggered pickups to get a little more pole height under the spy string. But open, or fretted the g is just very lifeless, lacks sustain and has a sort of a muffled sitar quality to it.
Anyone have any manic cures??
Thanks

Can you post close up pictures of your bridge and nut?

I think Jake is onto something there...for me, the only thing not mentioned in the OP was the nut...perhaps the string slots in the nut are not wide enough for the string gauge (particularly if using a vintage-inspired thicker gauge)...one would also expect more binding at the nut which would lead to strings going out of tune after bends/wide vibrato arm usage.

It can't be 100% a but problem if the fretted notes are dead too though right?

Have you checked to make sure the strings are not touching the bridge "body"? The strings should only contact the saddles.

Yep, checked that very carefully. I rem,bet on my mij jag I had to cut the saddle intonation screw and bridge lip a little to get proper string clearance

The nut is home, I made it but the slots were checked and refashioned a little by a master luthier so I'm pretty happy that they are good.

Strings have a high failure rate. Have you changed them?

Looks to me like there is both some screw and back of bridge contact going on. I can't tell from this angle. Confirm that there is no contact with anything other than the saddle.
My first step to fix this would be to make the saddle height screw all to where they are at the height where they are flush with the top of the saddle. Generally, the bridge and screws won't contact the strings like this. And once you do that, shim to taste and adjust the saddle height as needed.

I agree with Jake as I have the exact same issue and have to do just what he told you this coming week, but have not gotten to it yet as that guitar has not been taken out for a while and now I need to use it.
Bridge rails, if that is what they are referred to, are likely in contact with the string.

Ok. This has worked, and as above I guess you were right , there must have been some string contact
I replaced the saddle with another I had that was clean with no burs and had a nice tight spring and screw. I cut the intonation screw down and also raised the action a hair. I may need to shim a little to get playability bang on but its 95% there and sounding great!

I would also suggest making set of saddle height screws the same height. Having them at separate heights causes them to lower when they get strong vibration.

Thanks jake , I'll do that.
No lack of strong vibrations with the bull kelp surfers.

Will do. It's a public holiday in New Zealand tomorrow (Anzac day) so nice opportunity to catch up with the boys and lay down some tracks.
