Permalink 'Crushing Ice', distortion type of sound seemingly from the '63 Re-issue Reverb Tank particularly on high notes and strings.

Hi, I am getting a 'crushing ice' type, white noise type of sound particularly on high notes seemingly coming from the Reverb Tank. I've tried a few different valves and nothing seems to make a difference. Most annoying. The clean clarity is missing.

Can you record this sound?

The usual advice is to try swapping in new/different tubes/valves, checking input jack connections, checking/swapping RCA cables, and/or connecting your RCA cables to a different pan (perhaps to a pan in another amp). Hopefully you can isolate the problem that way. Good luck.

The pan is the weak link but also the cheapest. It's never a bad investment to have a few alternates on hand even for different sounds, as they vary widely.

Squink Out!

Reissue reverb tank - could be a number of things - particularly a cold solder joint (in which case reflow all the solder joints with 60/40 leaded solder)

or it could be loose socket pins (retention the pins with a watchmaker/jeweller's screwdriver - with the power off and the filter caps drained)

or it could be a bad tube, cable or pan, or a bad filter cap

If you don't feel confident about working inside your amp and don't understand tube-amp electronics - take it to a tech.

Which tubes did you change?

Thanks Wes, Brian, JObeast and Tubeswell, Sorry I've taken a while to acknowledge your kind suggestions but work has taken the place of enjoyment this week. I had a 6K6 RCA, a Sovtek 12AT7 and 12AX7 in when it started doing this. I decided to go back to the original specs of an Electro Harmonix 6V6 Groove Tube, 12AT7 and 12AX7, all new, and, if anything, its worse! At least as bad. I've just played for 4 hours of deafening and annoying ice crunching and white noise, hitting wrong notes everywhere because of the distraction! Sorry Wes, sending a recording of it is a bit beyond my Internet capabilities. I will now check out all the advice given, starting with cables and loose connections. The main power cable for the Unit is covered in hard plastic and is very stiff and crinkled from years of folding and unfolding for transit. Could that be a problem? I will put back a 6K6 NOS and take it from there. Thanks again all and I'll post the results, hopefully good.

No apology needed Denis, just trying to figure out what "crushing ice" type noise sounds like so we can give you some advice on a possible direction.

Turn the mix control all the way to dry. Is the crushing ice sound still there?

I put back some NOS 6K6, 12AX7 and 12AT7, and began experimenting with leads. Huge difference immediately, (probably because of the second valve change) I have 7 leads of all differing lengths and brands and after swapping them around found that two started causing the crushing ice sound to come back again so I relegated them to the bin. One of the others was alright but when everything started heating up it started breaking down. The bin again! I always thought that leads either worked or they didn't. Obviously not. I am going to have to buy new leads. Are Mogami as good as they say or are there any other that are recommended by any of you guys. By the way Tubeswell, the mix control didn't have any effect on the problem. Thanks anyway.

Pull all the tubes out, and switch the power on. Can you see/smell any smoke?

Let me rephrase Tubeswell, when I turned the mix all the way to dry it did stop the problem but I had no reverb at all.Winding it back to wet again I was back with the reverb and the noise again. I think I'm on top of it with the new valves and the leads.

If its an RI tank, and you've tried replacing all eh tubes and pan cables and the pan, then I suspect one or more cracked and/or cold-solder joint(s). This is a problem with unleaded solder. The cure is to reflow all the solder joints very sparingly with 60/40 leaded rosin core solder. If you're not confident about working on the innards (high voltage and such) take it to a tech.

what´s your dwell setting? what kind of guitar/PUs do you use?
Background to my question: If you have hot pickups and/or dial in too much dwell=gain then you´ll get distortion of the tube reverb itself which sounds not very nice to most ears. This is not a fault. It´s tube overdrive... So try to use less dwell and compensate the lack of reverb with the mixer knob. does that help?
If not-> ask a tech.
good luck

Did you swap tanks yet? They do go bad. I fixed one old one by epoxying small shims between the tiny transformers and the frame they were attached and where the two springs join at mid length. This eliminated distortion generated mechanically by small moving parts over a half century. As I said before, every Pan is different and they do go bad.

I'm not confident enough about soldering etc in there Tubeswell. If after trying everything else and there still is a problem I'll take it to a tech..
Leo, I'm playing an American Vintage, 62 reissue Jag with the original single coils. Nice and bright buy I've had it for about four years now with no problems (my baby!) I know what you are saying about the dwell and all and I have tried all the adjustments but as soon as the reverb kicks in at about 3 so does the noise. Thanks for the interest.
JObeast, same as I said to Tubeswell, far too technical for me and if it comes to that after I get these new leads I will let an expert do it. I'll let the expert see these suggestions as well. I hear Mogami Gold leads are the best and I will be buying a few of them and taking all my gear to a studio as I do each week and playing at volume on Saturday. Hopefully the problem will be fixed.
Thanks all for the suggestions.

Another possibility is loose tube socket pin clamps/bad contact. The cure for that is to re-tension the pin clamps by gently squeezing them together with a small jewellers screwdriver (with the tubes pulled out). Make sure the amp is off and unplugged and that the filter caps are discharged before you attempt this.

Yeah, the pins all seem to be straight enough. Will keep in mind the clamps though.

Did you buy a couple safe tanks yet?

Squink Out!

I bought a MOD Tank 4AB3C1B Tank a while back. I had trouble getting the 4 Support Springs off and back on so left the old one in. Any idea where I can get 4 new support springs to attach the tank?

Do you have a hardware store? (a real one)
