Permalink Review of Eddie Bertrand with Soundwaves at Surf Museum

Hey All,
I have been really been waiting for this show with a lot of anticipation.
As some of you know, Eddie has been practicing/playing on and off for the last few years with talk of a cd coming out.
So first I got down to Huntington beach around noon, to help set up the chairs and stuff in the parking lot. I parked about 5 blocks away, and as I got outta my truck, I could hear the sweet sounds of Surf loud and echoing thru the neighborhood. I thought to myself "wow that sounds really loud and really clean" So as I got closer to the Surf Museum, I noticed all the band equipment. There were 5 Showman amps, 1 black, 3 Blonde and one Tweed(recovered I assume). Eddie was going to be playing some songs with the Band Soundwaves. Lots of people started showing up, and by the time the band started all the seats were full and a couple people standing around be hind the chairs. As they played their 1st set by themselves, it got more and more crowded. The Soundwaves are a fairly compitent group of older guys that can play all the standards pretty well.
No originals, but good surf tunes all around. They did play Eddie's Border town(which I wish Eddie would have played later in his set, as its one of my favs.)
Up next was Eddie with the Soundwaves after a bit of sound checking.
he started really pacing around in anticipation. And then they announced him and they broke into a short set of:

Mr. Rebel
And The Angels Sing
Movin'
Scratch
Squad Car
Dark Eyes
Mr. Moto

right before he did Mr. Moto, he did one of his newer experimental surf type songs with the drummer, and it was very clean guitar with just a echo/ repeat unit for him to play along with.
The Crowd was going nuts and hooting and hollering for more.
I was really diggin' it too, and alot of us had smiles from ear to ear.

He said to keep an eye out for him as he planin' on making a big comeback.
and some very big show plans with other band in the future.

Here are some of the videos that Tim(HB Kahuna) took,

Gotta love his confidence and attitude. It sounds great.
HBKahuna- thanks for shooting and posting the video. Tiki- thanks for the review. Wish I could have seen that.

One of the largest crowds ever at HBISM. Everyone seemed really into Eddie. The sound coming out of those maps was UFB. There were a fair number of other musicians there. Jim Masoner & Tim Fitpatrick, original Lively Ones to name a few. When Eddie did his song with he drummer out front, he had the crowd mesmerized. I second everything BTD said. A memorable performance if ever there was one.

I'm told by a very reliable source Eddie very much wants to make a comeback. Its just a matter of finding the right backing musicians & opportunity. I really hope he is successful.

Man that new song was totally cool! I'm really intrigued to see what else Eddie has to offer his second time around taking a stab at the genre. I hope he really goes for it. That would be great.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know what happened to him between the years between 1965 and 2007? Was he making music somewhere?

Jeff, see if he'll do an interview. Either a spoken one for the podcast or written down for an article on the home page.

we'll see, I don't wanna be to pushy.

So, don't be pushy. He may be flattered. Does he know that he's still worshipped around here?

The musicians pouring their heart and soul into their performances makes each concert more amazing than the last. When you add 60's Legends to the mix of 2nd & 3rd wave surf bands the dynamics become phenominal for fantastic shows. Eddie has been bugged by his close friends for years to get back to his surf music roots until he finally gave in. In working with Eddie and talking extensively to him I can tell you he is a humble man with a passion for music and determination to be successful. His performance yesterday was no less than spectacular and commanded the respect of the audiences full attention. Eddie is one hot guitar player with more fire than the first go round and had the audience mezmerized. The determination Eddie has will carry him great distances and I suspect we'll be hearing a lot more of him.
The Sound Waves had to overcome the recent death of their drummer Jim Rudnick to throat cancer last month in order to play. Overcoming such a tragic loss in such a short time plus adding Eddie's intense playing, the Sound Waves did an outstanding job. We had the largest audience ever because the crisp sounds of the Sound Waves combined with the sweet sounds of Eddie's guitar echoed for blocks. On behalf of HBISM and myself I thank the Sound Waves for their great performance and for bringing Eddie Bertrand to us. We thank Eddie for working so hard to make Surfin Sundays an epic show. Thumbs Up

During a brief part of that time, he was playing gigs in Alaska. Bruce the drummer for the Glasgow Tiki Shakers was in Eddies bands but had no idea of Eddies history.

I'm still stoked from Eddies performance Sunday.

I think it's beyond awesome that Eddie Bertrand is coming back to surf! He is a huge influence on most of here.

Hey, I volunteer to be a part of his back-up band Very Happy I'll start practicing today....

Now if we could just talk those first-wave Colorado guys into playing some surf....

I'm with you Chris on both counts. I'd show up anywhere to see an Astronauts' reunion. Surf or no surf. No guitar player has had more influence on me than Rich Fifield. I have the complete A-nauts CD collection and even though the last ones with Leon Russell producing are lame as hell, I still reverie those guys.........ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

The show was great, the weather was great, the crowd was great and the gear was, well, unbelievable. Very cool stuff. I hope that show rasied the bar for how load the bands get to play at the museum.
Any complaints from the city?

Is that too much reverb?

I checked into the level at which our bands can play at the museum when I was told we weren't allowed to have higher than 95db at the edge of our parking lot and didn't have anything but our ears to measure it by. According to the Specific Events Director for the city of HB the 95db is measured only at the sound booth at "Pier Plaza" concerts regulated by the sound guy with a decimeter. Residental areas or residental combined with businesses such as the museum location do not have such restrictions. At the museum there is no decibel level specified, it's whatever the area will tolerate. If we get complaints it means a visit from the police and gets recorded at city hall. We try to avoid having complaints because our Surfin Sundays program would be shut down permanently if we become problematic. We have taken so many years to establish a good repoire with the city to open doors of opportunity leading to the ultimate museum we don't want to mess anything up. As far as raising the bar how loud the bands can play we still must proceed with caution. I have literally poured my heart and soul into expanding Surfin Sundays to bring the fans awesome shows and would devastated if I lost the opportunity to continue doing so. NO complaints from the city but keep in mind everyone for blocks was drawn to the museum and engulfed in Eddie's and The Sound Waves music most of that day because they were awesome. Monkey

Like I always say, if the band is good enough, no one complains. Five Showman amps blasting, Eddie absolutely on fire, no one called the police.

We never get cool bands like that up here... Althought Harry and the Potters will be here in several weeks. That is going to be a rad show.

I'm jealous of those who got to see Eddie play.

Greetings Surf Fans, I've just posted photos from last Sundays gig at
the Huntington Beach Surfing Museum featuring Eddie Bertrand with the'
Sound Waves. They can be found here

Enjoy! We did!!!

Surf's Up, Rich
