Oh, we've all got cases of "stageface" in my band. Case in point...

Over the years, PDM has tried lots of "looks" before we finally gave up. We did the Hawaiian shirt thing, but strictly with ironic intent (we are young guys making fun of old guys) but nobody go the joke. Then Jono went to Thailand and got matching blue silk shirts, and we looked like waiters in a Thai restaurant, which was fine, but the shirts were too hot and when we sweat, they turned dark under the pits so it was kind of embarrasing. Then one time we had played at a wedding where they wanted us to wear white tuxs, so at our next gig we still had the tuxs and wore them, but the Phanotm Surfers accused us of "stealing their act". The best and classiest was when Hang Ten briefly came back into business in '98 and we got very authentic matching aqua blue striped Ts. We wore them until there was a review of our show and the writer said we must have been dressed by Grrranimals so that was the end of that. Now we just try to look like we are from California.

for those born after 1980 or not from the USA, Grrranimals was a line of clothes designed for children that had an animal on it so the kid could learn to match clothes. So "Lion" style pants go with a "Lion" style shirt. Apparently wearing mismatched clothes in the USA is a big problem for worried mothers.

Yeah, that is the greatest story I have ever heard. Thank you for making my day.

I like the look of Chicchi's backing band, including the pageboy bowlcuts.

Anybody has a copy of the Neptunas topless playing in some bar in San Pedro.

bowlcuts are good. unfortunatly, my band consists of a girl, one guy bald, one guy balding ... and than there's me - not much to go on for uniform hairstyle

You could always try to convince the bandmembers to shave their heads. Or maybe start wearing wigs. Or do both, just like the Pyramids!

As frowned upon as Hawaiian shirts seem to be, maybe I'll incorporate one as part of a "hillbilly chic" ensenble...?

Well, I LIKE wearing my Hawaiian shirts.

In fact, in honor of this thread I'm gonna wear one at our next show, so if the sight of a skinny middle-aged guy in a Hawaiian shirt twangin' his heart out on a non-Fender guitar offends your delicate sensibilities, then by all means DO NOT COME.

uhh huh huh he said "twangin"...huh huh...he's old...

image

i think next time i play live, i am going for the "Opie Taylor" look...the little kid in Converse High Tops, rolled up Levi's, 1962 "surfer's wave" mixed with "Neil Armstrong NASA-issue buzzcut" (aka Floyd's Special $2.00) type haircut...and plaid, plaid, plaid short sleeve's from JC Penny's or Woolworth's...

image

some might think the look a little too "rockabilly", but I think it screams 1962 Burbank Hodad Gremmie Surf Kid with a new Fender Mustang all the way!!!

ps: yes, i too love Miss Helen...how could you not love a such classy lady in such a bitchen' grey wool outfit?!?!

I won't make it to the show, but not because I have anything against your shirt, or your guitar (actually, I like the older Bernie Rico guitars, before they turned into those god-awful 80's pointy-rock-sticks). I just happen to be one of two guys on this board from Florida.

For most of our gigs, I think the Opie Taylor/Dobie Gillis look would probably go over alot better than the matching tie routine...only because we tend to play with alot of punk, rockabilly and psychobilly bands...hell, imagine Reuben (bass player pictured abover with over-the-top rock face) with a plaid shirt, and we're there already.

The Disasternauts

This was from our first show this year.
I went with the Hawaiin shorts route instead of the shirt. The other guitar players wears them as well. We go between wearing sneakers and combat boots depending on who we are playing with that night.

image

The blood is because we are surf zombies. Last show we all donned white shirts with our logo on the left sleeve. The shorts and boots thing is a mainstay to our look. Like Hawaiin Mad Max of sorts.

Bill, that's pretty cool. pretty darn cool actually, I wish I had a suit like that. (and the sidburns!)

Just the other day I played my "best of Dolly Parton" cd again, since a long time.

Has anyone else done a show in lederhosen? (as pictured on the back of Around the World with Satan's Pilgrims). We did it for an Oktoberfest show we played... That and the Revolution garb (ala Paul Revere and the Raiders) still get the most comments from old Portlanders.

I suppose it's a matter of what you think your 'fans' expect that determines what your stage pesona is. At one of the resort hotels in Vegas, I saw the Ghastly Ones (young and in unifom) and the the Surfaris (old and teeshirt/bluejean casual). My wife noted that while the GO's set sounded pretty 'uniform' (plus we both didn't recognize any of their songs), the Surfaris played pretty much what we expected. I thought the GO's top hats were a little over the edge, but Paul Johnson looked like he could've just washed his car. Either way I was thoroughly entertained by both groups which was the whole point in the first place.

Personally I prefer Hawaiian shirts mainly cuz my boss can't stand them.

So have you guys ever performed in pilgrim outfits? Wink
