I play surf music because of my friend David.
We were teaching in the same school and he told me about the music he was doing by himself. He makes me hear it and I thought: "Woow that is great, dude!". And told him: "we should try to do a band". He was OK. I organised a meeting with my long friend Richard who is a drummer and I said: "Ok, Let gives us a goal: do one gig!". And Antoine our bassist finds us. I was never in a band before, on a stage, only played guitar for myself. At that point I had no idea what was surf music. David made me hear some surf... and I liked it... and wanted to know more about it... and find surfguitar101 etc etc... It's been 6 years that we are doing 10/12 gigs per year and having really good times.
So I play surf music by chance, I suppose.

Now, why I still play surf music?
It is because, in almost every gig we made, there was girls in the puplic dancing and having fun. And it is so good to see that.
Surf music is great because it makes the girls dance!

(And kids too, like Casey said. One of a great time I had on a gig was with my boy dancing around me and give me hugs.)

I just love this music so much, it's all I want to play right now. It's feel-good music, through and through. It's got history. It's exciting. It's dangerous. It's mysterious. It's danceable. It's bad ass. It's punk before there was punk. And surf ballads can be downright haunting, beautiful or both.

For me, the tones/sounds/vibe of the guitars in this genre are second to none. When I hear reverb, tremolo or someone creating a lightning strike by kicking their amp, I get a big smile on my face. To back a band on drums playing this stuff = Christmas morning, again and again.

Also, it's so visual for me. Depending on the song, I get images of beachy sunsets, tidal waves, drag races, rumbles, '60s spy flicks and showdowns in the spaghetti-laiden wild west. Maybe it's not having lyrics dictating what I should be imagining/feeling during the song or maybe it's how all the instrumentation comes together, but for me, each song is it's own mini soundtrack.

So the short answer is: Best. Music. Ever.

Reasons why I play Surf:

  1. I was raised on 50's and 60's music
  2. Songs can be a representation of absolute beauty or full-on fury unleashed, and all points in between
  3. I love the sound of when all the instruments come together melodically and crank out a surf tune
  4. I prefer instrumentals to most songs with vocals
  5. It's far more musical than many other genres of music
  6. It soothes my anxieties
  7. It reminds me of how beautiful the sun, the sky, the waves, and the earth are
  8. It's just plain AWESOME

I play because:

  1. Since the first time I heard surf guitar it touched something inside of me that made me love it instantly.

  2. It's cool! Really flippin' cool!

  3. It's different. I know very few people who even know what it is or the bands that play it.

  4. The guitar tone. You know, THAT surf guitar tone which is uniquely surf. That tone really appeals to me.

  5. Did I mention it's cool?

Surf is so fun to play! It's bright yet dark. Friendly yet mysterious. It's nice to stand out among so many Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Page, Hendrix clones. Even before I listened to traditional surf music I LOVED Agent Orange, Dead Kennedys, The Cramps, The Pixies etc.. then in the early 90's Pulp Fiction came out. I started to realize that a lot of the bands I loved were heavily influenced by surf. It was eye opening! I started listening to the old stuff and realized that I knew some of it already!

If I am not playing jangly rock I am playing surf.

Edit... add old B52's to my list too!
