Unfortunately there is no Instro Summit this year, you'll have to wait until next year. —Paul |

Unfortunately, Crispy is busy and will not be putting on Instro Summit this year up in the Durham area. Bummer. But that shouldn't disuade one from planning a BBQ run to North Carolina. (my fave BBQ as well, yell, I'll meet ya there!) Keep mid-September open kid........... ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

Ted, I could be wrong, but I think the term Cackalacky is relatively new in the grand scheme of things. I have lived in NC since 1985, but the first time I heard it was from bandmate Rusty Miller in Killer Filler (no rhyme intended). He said something along the lines of going to visit "south cack" and I was like WTF? This would have been 2007. He was from Greenville, SC, but that was the first time I heard the term "south cack" and "south cackalacky". Not sure if that's where the slang originated, but it has definitely carried over to North Carolina as well. In the small-world department, there is a line of bbq and seasoning sauces by a company called "Cackalacky". The company is actually based in Pittsboro, NC (ground-zero for El Mirage). I think Page (the owner) got things rolling in the 2003-ish time-frame and has continued to build a market presence. You can check out his site here: http://www.cackalacky.com Anyway, might explain the fact why your bro-in-law from NC wasn't familiar with the term. That, or the rock he lives under is right next door to mine. -murph P.S. In the really small world department, Cackalacky has a Cheerwine-based BBQ sauce but it doesn't even come close to Crispy's version. Anyone who has scored a jar (or 5) from him knows what I'm talking about. Simply amazing. —MONDOGUITARO.COM "I knew I was in trouble when the Coco-Loco tasted like water!" -- morphball Last edited: Mar 15, 2016 15:07:40 |

Pittsboro aka circle city was home for about 10 yrs. what was that hamburger place in siler city? Johnson's ? I'm thinking Pittsboro has gotten all gentificated like Cary. — |

Cadaddy, Depending on when you moved from PBO, probably not much has changed. It's "just far enough" from Raleigh and RTP that it has kept it's small town appeal. How many places have a Piggly Wiggly and a craft beer store in the same shopping center? Or a 4-star restaurant next to a hippy grocery store? PBO is also home to Carr Amplifiers (my son worked there last summer) and Roy Underhill has his Woodwright School in the same building as The City Tap (a great bar with a clientele that truly supports local music). And Carnivore Preservation Trust has been rebranded as Carolina Tiger Rescue... an amazing collection of rescued big cats. But change is definitely looming. There is a HUGE planned live/work/play type community called Chatham Park that is underway. At 7000+ acres, it is bigger than the town of PBO. Chatham Park is backed by Prestonwood Development Corp. which is owned by kabillionaire Jim Goodnight (founder of SAS in Cary). So yeah, you're "gentrification like Cary" comment may happen just yet. I'm hoping that PBO will maintain it's charm in spite of having Chatham Park as a neighbor. And yes, "Johnson's Drive-In" is still alive and well in Siler City. I think it was only in the last five years or so that they finally banned smoking in the restaurant. -murph —MONDOGUITARO.COM "I knew I was in trouble when the Coco-Loco tasted like water!" -- morphball Last edited: Mar 16, 2016 10:34:34 |

I moved out of Chatham in 2008, they were just setting up the Woodwright and the bar behind, Yea I would hang at Carr, and that little guitar shop in the Hatchery by the Library. Allen and Son, yum. I can't get a good hushpuppy round here. I figure Sanford is the next Pittsboro. — |

Ask and ye shall receive. As far as eastern NC style 'cue is concerned, King's is my hands-down favorite. And you can actually mail-order right to your door: https://www.kingsbbq.com Cadaddy, you moved from PBO the same year we moved in... some sort of surf guitar highlander sh*t going on there I suspect. -murph —MONDOGUITARO.COM "I knew I was in trouble when the Coco-Loco tasted like water!" -- morphball |

1) My mom was from Alabama and we've been saying North Cackalacky and South Cackalacky since the 1960s. 2) Any news on a 2017 Instro Summit? —Surf. The most dangerous of genres... Surfcat MARCH OF THE DEAD SURFERS! (2024) - Agent Octopus BANDCAMP - Agent Octopus |

Art, thanks for the historical perspective on "Cackalacky"! My wife is NC born and raised and had never heard it. She is, however, familiar with "damn yankee" (especially since she married one). I played a show with Crispy back in October and no mention of The Summit. We're supposed to get together in the next month or so and I'll see if he has any plans or details. -murph —MONDOGUITARO.COM "I knew I was in trouble when the Coco-Loco tasted like water!" -- morphball |
