Some pics from the Surf X Surf East night showcase featuring the Fintastics (Whichita Falls, TX), the Boss Jaguars! (Austin) and King Pelican (San Antonio).

THE FINTASTICS
The Fintastics started off the night with their first-ever Austin performance. The masked men from Whichita Falls gave a rockin’ show of traditional surf tunes, unexpected covers and some promising originals. Clever covers like the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” were definite crowd pleasers (especially for the “dragged along girlfriends” in the audience). I think it’s safe to say that the Fintastics will be welcome in Austin whenever they want to come back.

THE BOSS JAGUARS!
The Boss Jaguars! laid down a surf stompin’ party from the word go. They also won for most eye-popping guitar in Chris Harrison’s sparkle finish Jag. Stand out songs included their original, pounding-drums stomper “Rust Bucket” and cheeky cover of “Saw Her Standing There”. Great energy, amazing playing - the Boss Jaguars! were a rockin’ fun time. And oh man that rhythm section - they are the pocket.

KING PELICAN
The first and last time I saw King Pelican was 2015’s Surf X Surf East, and I’ve had their album, Matador Surfer, in heavy rotation ever since. It was great to see them perform in Austin again, rockin’ their distiinctive style of South Texas Surf with cool confidence and swagger. Can’t say enough good things about this band or where they’re taking surf music.

From past me to future you

Thanks for the pics and write-up Rottenman! Last night was a really great show, it felt like even better turnout than last year when we had Daikaiju play. It was great to see such a connection between the bands and the audience, all night long. We proved once again that few forms of music match the joy of live surf rock.

Here are a couple clips, one song from each of the bands at Nomad.

Thanks for sharing! Looks like it was one great time!

Yes indeed, the crowd was most definitely large and enthusiastic. That was really great to see, and really fun to be a part of. There are some really great surf bands in Texas... it's impressive.

From past me to future you

It was an epically fun time! The Fintastics were great- glad to meet you guys...and the Boss Jaguars were awesome, as usual!
Thank you Kaleb for another super fine production of Second Saturday Surf and Surf by Surf Easst! Tony, thank you for the pics and the kind words.
We always enjoy playing Austin, the surf is strong there.
