I used to go to surf films in the early 1970s, and there were still some surf bands playing at those. But, I don't recall who they were! But I did go to see Satan's Pilgrims at Bruce Willis' bar in Idaho, just shy of Sun Valley. Surf music had always been background music, but Satan's Pilgrims really brought it front-and-center. Anyway, the Pilgrims were the opening act, but of course, they blew doors on Bruce and his backup blues band. What an amazing show! Triple guitar attack! Sometime later, I went to see Dick Dale, too, which was great. Got to meet Mr. Dale and spend an hour interviewing him in his hotel room, then got to go back stage and met Dusty and Sam. Then, got to see the band on the few occassions Dick came through town. Great introduction - Dusty again came through town last year with Agent Orange and we got to talk again. |

I saw the The Ventures at Sweet Springs Saloon in Los Osos, California back in 1991 or 1992. I also saw the Red Elvises when they were street performers in the Open Air Mall in Santa Monica around 1998. Other than the few bands we play with here and there. I really haven't been to too many Surf Shows. Probably due to the fact my wife gets bored with it quickly. But she digs seeing Deadbolt every now and then. My wife is into KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails and other Industrial rock. Which is cool, I don't think we would have much in common if she was into rap or R&B. _RT |

Dick Dale in '92 - but actually it was Laika & the Cosmonauts in Washington, DC in '94 and '95 that did the main - and permanent - damage to my pysche. Without them I wouldn't be here. Ivan —Ivan |

I saw the Insect Surfers in Tampa in 1985, but they weren't a surf band then. My band at that time, the Twisters played four surf songs. I saw the Beach Boys in 86, but that was pretty bad. In 89- 91, S.F. had the Mermen, Phantom Surfers, Ultras, Woodies, Trashwomen, Aqua Velvets. The Mermen really started to hit their stride in 93, and about that time Laika&TC passed through, and I saw the Insects again. The first time I saw LSJ was in 95 at one of Phil Dirt's live shows. Ferenc, I bet we were at the same show in '92 or '93 with the Ultras and Mermen and other bands at El Rio. Yes, I saw a bunch of the El Rio shows. That club still does surf, we played there in 2005.

The first time I saw surf music performed live was at a Briarcliff High School after football game soc hop. The band was the "Esquires" from Tucker GA. I am pretty sure it was September 1963, I remember they played Pipeline and Wipe Out and a bunch of Ventures covers. I joined the Esquires in the Fall of '65 and played with them until early '68 when the band broke up. During that period they wouldn't even consider playing "surf music." By far the most important show was the Penetrators at the Star Bar, January 1997. That one performance set the wheels in motion that resulted in: The X-Rays, The Surge!, the AcoustaSonics, Three CD's, The Boatwerx studio, Eddie Katcher and some really great friendships. These last ten years of being involved with the "Third Wave" have been the absolute best times I've had in my forty plus years fooling around with music........ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

I'm glad we met, Brian! I don't remember anything awkward or fanboyish. Just a guy who's a sincere fan of the genre. Like many here I think the first surf show I saw was Dick Dale. I don't remember the year but it was right after Pulp Fiction. I had played in a surf bandâthe Zombie Surfersâin the 80s, but I think this was the first time I saw a surf band. — |

Mt first was D.D. in '94. I knew about him, and had just gotten a compilation album with "Miserlou" on it. Back then, at least here in Colorado, it was nearly impossible to find any surf music ( The Beach Boys 'miserlou' was all I had to go on for a long time) - at least I had a hard time finding it. I wasn't exactly sure what he would do, but I read a review in Rolling Stone around that time, and it said he was great. The Club he played at is small, and he was wandering around before the show. His guitar was on stage, just sitting there. i remember looking at it thinking "that thing looks pretty beat" he came out a blew the room away - it was awesome! I went out the next day and started looking HARD for surf music. —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |

Ok neither are 'technically' surf, but I saw the Insect Surfers (original DC new wave lineup) open for the Ventures at a club in DC in the early 80's. That was a great show!!!! Saw the Insects many times when they were still here in DC. The show that got me back into the surf scene was the Space Cossacks at IOTA circa 2000. Another great show!!! -Paul —Paul |

I nearly forgot, I saw the Neptunas at Sacred Grounds in San Pedro sometime in the 90s, first time I went to see surf music by design. They were cool but didn't send me over the edge. |
