Not super early as none of the original guitars had painted head stocks. However, Bob commented somewhere that they really liked the Jazzmasters as they were reliable and stayed in tune pretty good.
He put have had it for at least 10 years as it is apparently the same guitar that he was playing in their 1989 reunion video.

Ed,
I remember reading a post here where you said you saw them and Rick was playing a Mustang? Do you remember what the others were playing?
There are some photos of them standing around their van with black tolex Fender cases. I guess a bound neck Jazzmaster could be in one of those...
Regadless I'm calling the '65 RI the Bob Demmon model from here on out.

Thanks to all the guys here on this site, Sorry it took so long to get the 3rd edition of Surfin' Guitars out. I almost died from Spinal Meningitis back in September and that was a wake up call to 'get er done' I appreciate your kind remarks and I appreciate this site because it keeps surf music happening.

Thank you so much Bob, and so glad you're still walkin' the planet with us!

Wow! Bob! That was scary! I shared a tent with a fellow Scout on a weekend camping trip when I was in the ninth grade. On Tuesday AM I was grabbed up out of class and dragged to the Principal's office where I found out that my tent mate (and good friend) had died that morning of Spinal Meningitis. Really scary stuff. I took the huge sulphur horse pills for several weeks. Got lucky.
Bill, as I remember the A-nauts from those shows: Rich was playing the Mustang with the slinky strings, Bob was playing a White Jazz Bass (maybe Stormy's) and Dennis was playing either a Jag or a Jazzmaster. We talked to Rich and Bob quite a bit and also Jim. I don't remember talking with Dennis too much. Good guys. They were playing the blackface Fender amps, two Dual Showmans and Rich had a Super Reverb with several blown speakers. My SR had speaker issues at that time as well. (Fender first used some speakers in those SR's that had paper voice coil formers). That didn't last long. Don Randall ultimately replaced all mine with speakers that had aluminum coil formers. No more blown speaker in my SR.
There is a gal who contacted me through PM on this site that dated Dennis prior to his going into the Army. She lives in the Atlanta area, and has been out to hear The Surge! play. I hope to see her at shows in the future. We have exchanged A-nauts stories and that's been really neat.

Ordering from Amazon Create and having the book shipped to the EU worked without any problems for me. Shipping to Germany was not at all expensive at $4.88. I'm not sure whether they shipped it from the US, or if they had it printed somewhere in the EU (as Lulu does). I didn't get hit with import tax, either.
Take the plunge, you won't regret it

Same here. I'll go further to say the service was excellent. I queried the order because it had taken a month, but I knew it could have been Christmas postal delays.
They apologised and sent another copy, and said if the original turned up I could keep it too with their compliments (it hasn't turned up). Second order was with me in 10 days.
As for the book; it's fantastic. And I wasn't expecting something that size! I'm going to have to attach a set of wheels to it if I want to read it in another room!

Thanks Clarry and Roy69 for your responses...
I've tried ordering the book from Amazon Create twice but I had a problem (on my side I should point out - not on their side) with having a suitable bank card!!
I intend not to give up! I bought the original 1st edition of the book direct from Bob when it came out all those years (30?) ago and would love to catch up with things now with a new edition...
