How often do you guys listen to this stuff? Why aren't they mentioned more often? Hearing "Point Conception '63" on North Sea Surf Radio on the way to work this morning sent chills up my spine (as it does every time I hear it) and made me think about the above questions. Such an overlooked band, especially considering their timeframe and Bob Dalley's incredible contributions to the Surf music world.

Fresh out of high school, my band played with them and The Wigs at the Star Theater in San Pedro around 1980/81. We thought we killed it, then the Surf Raiders took the stage and we realized we didn't know what the f*ck we were doing Confused

Great question, Jonpaul. I did a search of sg101 and found just two topics with eleven total posts devoted to The Surf Raiders by name. I confess they fall into that period I know the least about, since there are relatively few discussions here about that time-frame compared to early, recent, and contemporary surf music. At least I recall seeing very few in my few years here.

Here's Point Conception '63.

I thought I had something from that show -

Seeing the Surf Raiders was truly an eye-opening experience. This was the pre-internet stone age and we had no clue how to get THAT sound. The Surf Raiders had it in spades. Learned a lot that night - still took many years to get even close to sounding that good!

I have most of their recorded output.
but sadly I never saw them, which is sad,
considering that they used to play in Buena park at
knotts berry farm just a few miles from my house.
And sadly I don't have Bob Dalley's book "surfin guitars"
I really need to get that.

I think that they were a pretty good band.
Definitely in the 80's surf top 3, with John n the Nightriders
and the Halibuts.

They were a Beacon of Reverb to me in 1980-1984: the Surf Raiders gave me hope for a better tomorrow.

When I was around 15, back in the days of portable cassettes, I used to record my local college radio station when they had some cool stuff. Sure enough there was a surf music special and I got a whole side of a tape of this unique instrumental guitar music that I hadn't known existed. One song really stuck out, a very mysterious song that changed rhythms in the middle and had that really strange echoey sound. Really gave me goose bumps! It always stuck with me, and years later I found out it was Wave Walkin' by The Surf Raiders. Thanks guys!!!

Great to read about the Surf Raiders. They helped us get gigs and Bob and Neal recorded our single when I was in a "punk surf instrumental" band in '81 named the Ripp Tides...kind of Agent Orange meets Jon and the Nightriders (we learned every song off of "Live at the Whiskey" and added a dozen or so originals, some of which got played on KROQ) I was the guy surfing on their Raiders of the Lost Surf album (just changed my avitar to that photo...) good times...actually GREAT times. Best of all, after our recording session for our single I got to hang around Neal's home studio and he showed me how to play Point Conception, that song gives me chicken skin every time I play it to this day!

That's a great story! Thanks for sharing it.

What Jeff said ... I listen to them very often, love their drip and vibe, BANGALORE and TSUNAMI ... are killer tunes ... and the bass sounds so good, you can listen to every note, that's Surf Bass!

When you have to shoot ... shoot! Don't talk.

Thanks for reviving this thread. I hadn't listened to them before. They are pretty frickin' awesome!
Does anyone know if any of the members went on to doing any other surf music?

Yes, I've been hearing these tunes on NSSR and FJ and didn't catch the title or artist. They capture the mysterious and melancholic sound of early surf but with a touch of sophistication. It's mind-boggling for me to imagine playing this way in 1981. Too bad I was all into British bands then, I missed something very cool. At least we have the recordings!

Squink Out!

"Point Conception" was written by their rhythm guitarist Neil W. Kuzee.
The track was released in 1982 on their LP "Raiders of the Lost Surf" on blue vinyl. Surf Wax Records SW 1001
It was released as a single backed with "Unknown" on Surf Wax 103
There is a version called "Point Conception ´63" backed with "Crash" on Surf Wax 102

Great Band, but being from a small town in Upstate New York, I had never heard of them until 2 years ago, when I saw there LP Surf Bound at a used record sale. I purchased the Lp and since I've bought all the Surf Raiders I could find on the Internet. Some times I wish I lived in California.

I want to thank Jeff for sending me the like to this discussion concerning the Surf Raiders. I want to let you all know that I am very humbled by your comments and enjoyed every one I read. It seems like a million years ago when the Surf Raiders got together. It is great to see that we might have been a good influence during our time together. Thanks everyone for your support.
