Rhino Records releases a set of CDs in 1994, "Rock Instrumental Classics" volumes 1-5. I only have volume 5, "Surf," but volume 1 "The Fifties" and volume 2 "The '60s" looks like they might be interesting. The track lists have some bands people already mentioned. The Fireballs with "Bulldog", Duane Eddy, Link Wray, Sandy Nelson. Does anyone have these CDs and can comment if there were any songs that would have big influences on surf?

I like to play because they're young duane eddy
listen closely for hard to hear details,
he plays soft during when the orchestra is playing.
also listen to this chet atkins piece called
coming back home to indiana again.
player is paul moseley he plays it good.
it's not as hard as it sounds.

This is a very odd thing to say. No one suggested limiting themselves to pre-surf, they were just interested in exploring it further.

Batman premiered in 66. Munsters in 64. Bonanza would be the only pre-surf theme in 1959.

I'm just saying the point of
focusing on pre surf music inspiration is not
going to accomplish anything as it's all instrumentals anyway.
and who cares.

So people can't be curious about things and start interesting discussion with other like minded people?
and who cares.
If you don't care, why are you here?

'Stampede' by The Scarlets, is a great pre-surf instrumental that was covered by Jon & the Nightriders and Messerchups.
Holy F**K that was AWESOME!
1959.
This made my night. Thanks Arny.
The other stuff is good as well - none of which I'd heard besides Space Guitar - but Stampede just blew me away.
yup... I also just got my mind blown a little by Stampede. Thanks Arny!

Brian stop banging your head on the computer
you might hurt yourself.
yes it's good to be curious .
it might be that every instrumental might be inspired
by something different since everybody's differrent.
like dick dale was a country player
he was inspired by wild animals and nature.
so the inspirations might be different.
plus why is it pre surf if they didnt even
call it surf it was instrumentals.
also i say who cares to make people respond more.

If you put it that way: I care. As a boy I was fascinated with theme tunes from films, television and radio. I loved the music of Henry Mancini, Ennio Morricone and even Mantovani. It got me into the most wonderful melodies that painted vivid images in sound. Surf for me is a logical next step since I learned to play the guitar, so yes, I care. I love Apache and Bombora, even after hearing it a hundred times. Because to me it is the link to the music I learned to love as a boy.
I enjoy reading all the posts and responses on SG101, because I have the feeling I'm among friends who more or less share the same background. But I agree with Brian, we shouldn't have to use strong expressions to get our point across. You're among friends, it's ok to have a different opinion. We have our own.

Up here in Canada we had our own Duane Eddy. His name was Kenny Hepburn and he released an album called Twangy Guitar. I'm not aure if this was released in the pre-surf era, but the sound certainly is.
Collector records released 4 volumes of early Canadian Rockers that are mostly pre-surf. There are a lot of cool tracks on those releases.
Ken Davidson (who settled in Nova Scotia) also released some pretty cool instros including Teenage Walk, and Twist Man Easy.

now were cooking,
where i'm from people talk with expression
it breaks the ice and people will start responding more.
good responses.
i think in the early years of instrumentals or surf
it expands more to orchestras jazz and tv not just guitar.
also not everyone had pa systems or sings.
if you focus on just the guitar of the time
you won't get the whole picture.
it's like this.
