Wow, palo, thank you very much for the kind words! Like many on this board, I'm just a guy in the basement with just enough gear to try and capture ideas. If I can do it, anyone can. I also wanted to clarify that my earlier statement about "Not wanting to sound cocky about the electric guitar tone" in Legends was totally tongue-in-cheek. You may have noticed there is no electric guitar in that track. Hey Art, Thanks for the listen! All of those tracks were done in garageband, with the exception of The Waltz With No Name. That song actually started life as s garageband demo, but I redid the song at a studio. There's simply no comparison between an actual cellist and me hacking around in garageband. I'm still amazed how it's possible to at least emulate orchestration for a song. I can't read/write music, very little music theory, etc., so having a tool like garageband makes it possible to experiment (to figure out what works) and then have an archive of the finished product. Speaking of tones, all of the electric guitar parts in those songs (including the studio track "Waltz"), the guitar tone is all modeled amps and pedals within GB. At the time I did those tracks, I didn't have a proper reverb unit or effects. Plus, I did 90% of the tracking late at night, so plugging straight into the computer made that possible. Now that I think of it, "Chasing Shadows" is the first demo I've done with my Texotica reverb unit and Strymon El Capistan... no other signal processing outside of or within GB. I hope to record future demos with my amp. I'll add that I just checked out Murph's tracks in another post. Murph - as far as this thread goes, you're songs are exactly what I like to hear. It's like the "flavor", but not so much a "direct" copy. I mean, sure, some of the "cliches" are there, but in many ways your pieces are more of an "extension" of the genre, rather than being smack in the middle of it. Other than "Chasing Shadows" which is an obvious homage if you know the work of The Shadows, the rest were more like "inspired by" the genre without being so much a pastiche (and I'm still using pastiche as a good thing). Honestly, I'd need to work pretty hard to get what you've accomplished. I did comment on the recording aspects you asked about in the other thread though, so there you go. Steve |
