I think there could be a debate on the 3rd wave. Is it still happening, has a fourth wave started, or are we in a inter-wave period?
Of course there hasn't be a period of no surf which would make it difficult to argue against this being the 3rd wave.
However, several things I can think of that may help a post-3rd wave argument are, the rise of myspace and the internet, the end of surf bands getting on record labels, and public awareness is much worse. Surf bands used to be able to tour the country, that cannot happen these days with the success enjoyed in the mid 90s.

The end of the third was when Mr Phil Dirt retired from the radio.

There is a wave? I don't see it. Where is it?
The larger question and one that has been sorta danced around in all this "Los Straitjackets with singers" and "wave" talk is really one of the cultural relevance of instrumental music. Somewhere I have bookmarked a website with every top 20 (USA) intstrumental hit since the 1950s...
Yep, here it is: every top 20 (USA) intstrumental hit since the 1950s
Check it out. Sobering stuff.
Yes, the Internet helps. But then again, it helps almost all niche groups more or less equally. And of course there is a finite amount of time and money per web user. Sorry for the long-hair post, my meds (caffeine) haven't finished brewing yet. That was a cheap shot. I will edit it out...

Going back a bit in this thread, I think Ivan had it correct when he listed 5 things that have made 'em so popular. The one thing that he left out though was the fact that Eddie Angel is so well-connected in the rock n' roll/surf/rockabilly scene of the last 20 years. He runs a label, Spinout Records, and is close with the folks at No Hit Records in the UK, that did most of the Kaisers LP's and put out the Viva Las Vegas rockabilly shows in Vegas each year (as well as the Grind/Rockaround fests). They've also hooked up with a strong label, YepRoc, that helps 'em out quite a bit.
I haven't seen the Conan appearance yet, so can't comment on that. Honestly though, I think their instro CD's kinda lost their spark after the first few and they probably have done the right thing hooking up with vocalists and doing the "backing band" thing for a bit. Maybe they have an arsenal of 5-star instros ready to go. I also found the show they did in Bellingham recently with Kaiser George highly entertaining, and my wife (who doesn't really like surf music) had a great time. The Kaisers are one of my all time favorite bands, so the show definitely worked for me too.

I'd love to see them with Kaiser George, not so much with Big Sandy.

LHR....thanks for posting that link....it took me back to the days when a good song was a good song. Now, it's all catagorized! Too bad. How's the rhythm section on "Josephine"? Man alive that's some kinda groove. You know what? I LOVE MUSIC AND AM PROUD TO BE A MUSICIAN!!

While I was not really fond of the decision to sing in Spanish, LSJ are a good band & I would go see them if they were playing local. I'm wondering if the decision to sing in Spanish was more marketing related rather than artistic.
Tim, um the LSJ's just played the Galaxy about a month ago.
it was a all ages family show, many people took their kids.
Kristena took her daughters.

If only I had a "Way Back Machine." I'm sure my son would have been thrilled..
