No, absolutly not the same feeling

My band mate has been trying to decide between the 200 Pro and the 101.
He was thinking the Reverb and Limiter could be cool and admittedly we haven't tried the Pro but after watching Lorenzo's video and playing with my 101 he's decided on the 101, mostly because of the different voicings and we never need anything close to 200 watts.
There may be a 200 pro in our future but Quilter is coming out with such great products these days we'll probably happily use the 101 for a while.

Cheers,
Jeff

I finally got around to doing some recording with my 101 Mini-Head.
I used it for all the guitar tracks on my 2015 SG101 compilation submission.

https://surfguitar101.com/downloads/details/678/

For anyone interested:
I used the "Lead" setting with low gain for the melody and BassVI parts
and the "Full Q" setting for the rhythm guitar.
I used a 90's era reissue Fender Tank before the amp and a Warehouse GT90 speaker mic'd with a shure SM-57

I am very happy with the results and how flexible the amp was during recording.

Hope this helps anyone who's considering one.

Cheers,
Jeff

Absolutely helpful, thanks (said w/Modelo Uno looping in the background)
Cool

Glad that helped Wes.
I should note (and I did in another thread) that when I mastered "Modelo Uno" I did it quickly and amateurishly using Garageband and the lead/melody guitar sound got a little "spikey" and percussive compared to the actual recording due to the overall mastering compression.
Keep that in mind if using this as a reference for the 101. The actual tracks are a little smoother sounding.
I need to have my bandmate pro master this song for me.

Cheers,
Jeff

Jeff, thanks for the add'l info on the track. My ears thought it sounded great.

...but after watching Lorenzo's video

No kidding. An online demo is one thing; listening to someone whose songs you're familiar with do this stuff (yours & Lorenzo at Cousin Mary's) is on another level. I'm very impressed. Now I've got to dig back in some threads maybe and see what Danny meant when he said "lightweight 12." I suppose a little closed-back thing with an even-tempered 75-100w capable speaker could fill the bill. Many of those to choose from.

(And I don't expect a Vox tone out of one. I've got the little AC10 which is killer.)

We've got an 12" Eminence Lil Texas Neo magnet speaker coming tomorrow to try out. It's a high sensitivity (101db) speaker with 150 watt handling that weighs 4 pounds. I've tried the 101 with a handful of speakers already including one older Jensen Neo, not the Tornado. The Jensen Neo sounded pretty good with it but a little dull and lifeless.
We'd like to find a Neo that will work for us so that we can build some smaller, lightweight cabs for the 101's and keep travel easy.

Looking forward to hearing about how that sounds. Smile
Edit: Thinking back to my Blues Jr days I recall Bill Machrone had some nice things to say about the Li'l Texas.

One other question for those that actually have one:

Where does the amp tend to dissipiate its heat from? To the end of what would need to be the orientation of a little carry-cabinet w/handle for it in terms of air movement? Just curious.

Wes,
The 101 seems to dissipate heat from the bottom and back. I think this is one reason it has such stout, tall rubber feet. It gets warm at best after a few hours use, not hot, but I've wondered about this as well as I've already seen some folks on the interwebs posting pictures of 101's mounted in cabs. I think I'm going to build a cab that the head can be stored in for travel but is not permanent so that I can keep it mobile, grab and go for other, bigger cabs and travel when using other, borrowed cabs at festivals.
This is funny; I was looking for a nice carry bag for mine, something small, maybe ballistic nylon and ended up finding a padded lunch/sandwich bag, cooler affair at Target that fits the head great with just enough room for the AC cable. It's black and grey and looks like it was made to be a 101 gig bag...$12.00

Jeff

I like the idea of the cooler thing. I was also thinking, long-term, on something one could apply some aesthetics to based on whatever cab they might be using regularly. In your case though you could be playing through anything, lol.

I'm sure if a person wandered through a big box "home" store or the housewares section with an open mind the light-bulb may click on. If it were going into a larger bag, maybe just a cinching strap of some kind, with a Fender amp handle at each end for grins. Locks down around the unit like a bracelet-type watch band.

Anyway, can't wait to hear the Lil Texas; this little amp actually intrigues me.

My 101 Head transport options.
One practical, especially with a small shoulder strap and the other
just plain weird and cool

I was wondering about the heat thing myself. I have a little ZT Lunchbox amp that is similarly enclosed in a metal housing and I have had it overheat and shut down on one or two occasions. I've been a little concerned that the 101 might do the same thing if left on for a period of a couple of hours or more. Hopefully that will not be an issue.

For a carrying case of sorts, I found a barely used Dell laptop case in a thrift store for 3 bucks. It is the perfect way to transport my Quilter 101. It has straps to secure it in place and room around it for cables, etc. in addition to having an external pocket for more misc. stuff.

Fixed it for ya! I forgot to mention yard-sales...
And the lunchbox will take stickers etc., better than the nylon! Big Grin

Rob, FWIW,
I've had mine on for about 4 or 5 hours at a time with no problems.

Wes,
Thanks for the "corrections" LOL.
I agree. The Grandma case is actually a small suitcase and quite durable.
My bandmate found a matching blue "Going to Grandmas" suitcase with a little boy on it...but it was "collectible antique" priced.

Jeff

No heat issue with the Micro Pro 200 head, either. Here it is at a four-hour gig last Friday with the Royal Aces...

Damn pickers from Iowa & the pawn shows on TV have ruined the lunchbox market. Big Grin

That 200 in the pic above looks totally at home.
Thumbs Up

Fenderfan, is that a lo/z XLR to high/z 1/4" adapter I see plugged into that quilter?

Whats up with that?

Hi Caddady,
Yes, that's for our microphone, for occasional announcements and comments to the crowd. The guitar is plugged into the other channel.

Got it. Thought it might be a secret weapon.

This thread is increasing my Quilter 101 GAS tremendously. I just bought a Traynor DH15H recently though. On a side note I had the blue, little boy and his dog version of that little suitcase when I was a kid. Weird, I hadn't thought about that in decades.

I was putzing around & realized I've got a bunch of small Pelican cases sitting around, several with no occupants since I don't shoot competitively anymore. The local shop is always picking up little 1x12 cabs, with or without spkr, but cheap enough you could sell the speaker back & put in something you want. Maybe that's an omen...
