Permalink Surfmotherfuckers - Early 2000's

New Topic

I somehow came upon this band back in the early 2000's and got ahold of an EP and one Album. I don't know much about them, but still love the two releases to this day. These live videos are fuzzy, to say the least, but all I can find of live footage. I believe they were from Brazil. Does anyone have any extended info on them?

I am in no way ofended by the name.
but I think its a horrible choice for obvious reasons.

I have played one of their tracks on the radio, but I cannot back announce the band's name on broadcast - FCC and all that.

I agree, sort of. We're mostly all adults here and it's nothing we're not used to.

But I recently gave my copy of Brave New Surf to a really nice woman who sits through her young son's guitar lessons the same night I have mine. She's the sort of parent aspiring musicians dream of. She buys her sons decent gear to learn on and lets them practice at home as much as they want. And she's enthusiastic about all of it, not begrudging.

She's also been listening to me rehearse with my guitar teacher and has become very curious about surf music, asking lots of questions and saying she enjoys what I play. But there's no way I could have given her Brave New Surf if this band were on it. Nor would the father of the 14 year-old bassist who's joining us have appreciated it, or let him stay. Or my mother-in-law before her. And, while The Bambi Molesters raised eyebrows, my explaination of its' history came across as charming; something I couldn't acomplish on behalf of these guys.

I think everyone gets the name. It fits, in a way. I don't have a problem with it. But how well would it go over at an all-ages show? Would they get invited on Today or Ellen? I just wouldn't choose a name the cut off potential audiences, air-play and gigs. One of the striking things about the recently revived thread about another band with a controversial name is that no one would book them under that name. I wonder what ever happened to them? Actually, I wonder what happened to these guys too?

But then I'm over 60.

IMHO. YMMV.

I will admit that the name is terrible. But look at the video and ages of the musicians. They all seem like they were in their eatly 20's. i was hardly concerned with the extended implications of such things at that age. These days I most certainly understand this. Hell, the name of my band now is nowhere near as controversial and has still caused us problems, mostly due to the average American having little understanding of how a comma changes the overall meaning of a phrase. Hahaha

I want a Kill, Baby...Kill! sticker on my guitar case the next time I fly with it. Big Grin

I really do want the sticker for my guitar case. I've saved a spot for it. But I wouldn't take it inside an airport let alone try to get it on a plane.

And about the importance of commas, "Lets eat Grandma" versus "Let's eat, Grandma." No wonder there are so many twitter fails; no one uses punctuation anymore.

Luckily I don't think a punk band with only tangential surf influences from Brazil has aspirations to play on Ellen.

Looks like they did get played on some TV show though.

I dig the music and hate the name. It's cool to see a Ric bass used for something other than prog rock!

Either you surf, or you fight.

Hi Guys , This Daniel Todeschi , lead guitar on the surfmotherfckers , Pedro our basss player found this forum and showed to the rest of the band , as the name goes , it sounded really cool here in brazil in the late nineties , we were younger then , but it really like the fact that it[s kinda of a rotten name , does have some punk attitude. since i moved to sao paulo in 2004 and the rest of the banda remained in Belo Horizonte, we started to slowdown gigs and reheaseals , to a point of having an annual Gig , last years was really cool, we played at the coolest nightclub in Belo Horizonte. i ill be posting soon , Pedros footage of the show. we re happy to answer any questions

Daniel, Welcome to the site. I missed this when it first got posted but really enjoyed the videos. I like the old school surf punk vibe. I have to admit when I first saw your band name I kind of cringed. We usually try and keep the language kind of on the clean side here.
That said, it ain't punk if you're not offending someone!
Looking forward to hearing some more of your music.

Just when I thought surf bands' names couldn't get any worse . . . Smile

Daniel, thanks for chiming in. I have been a fan of the band since first discovering it through a blog site so many years ago. And it would be an understatement to say that your album was a big influence on the early years of my own band. I believe I just sent you a friend request on Facebook. I hope we can talk there in the future.

And I agree about it being a terrible name. However, I can relate. Some decisions seem great at the time. And then years later we sit back and say "what was I thinking?".
