I really like my EHX East River Drive. It's pretty much a Tubescreamer clone, but it's still a nice mild drive.

Either you surf, or you fight.

Thanks man, I'll check it out Smile

hi!
just to drop another option - MXR Distortion III ... i use this quite often, and it is a decent fuzz/OD pedal. I have to admit that i am not using my jaguar a lot (my guitars have a more mosrite/gretsch sound), but marcus, our second guitarist is pretty happy with it too (and he uses jags and jazzys). if you want to, you can check the link in my signature to the Chicharrones EP - "Comanche" is played with that pedal and a Mosrite style pickup in neck position through a very clean AC 30 and a surfy bear (plus some little slapback delay from a MXR carbon copy ...)

Sounds cool! I've been known to use "The Fez" by Nocturne Pedals. Tavo describes it as for those of us who appreciate some turf with our surf. It overdrives and kinda makes your reverb happier too! My favorite part is dialing it all the way to Billy Gibons!

Cool
Bender has a home made jobbie based on the hot cake. Might whip round and borrow it

I also have a Rangemaster clone that sounds utterly wicked.

Yep I use a rangemaster clone as well - esp useful to provide a smidgeon of treble boost with my Jazzmaster which gives a nice presence when going through a tank.

Tried a Sparkle Drive? Pretty much a tube screamer with a clean knob. Miss mine. The Joyo Sweet Baby, a Mad Professor Sweet Honey clone, can have some very nice OD sounds for very little coin. Timmy, as suggested, should get you there also.

You want a transparent overdrive, these have become very popular.

The EHX Soul Food, you can't find a cheaper pedal. I think Amazon has them for $59 new. I use one myself, really great pedal.

I just put one on my board. Best drive pedal for my amp setup. Very transparent and does exactly what I want a drive pedal to do.

Hmmm, I've had G.A.S for a soul food for a little while now, I read they're Klon clones, must get one soon.
Can't believe I forgot to suggest EH Hot Tubes I think it's a pretty dynamic little stomp box.

I have been getting quite interested in the Xotic Effects BB Preamp Overdrive. It has been getting killer reviews on many guitar sites. Anyone here own or have hear one live?

For the budget challenged:

Last weekend I stumbled over a new brand ENO, never heard of them before. They make mini pedals like Mooer, but they seem a bit more reliable and sturdy. It's a very low budget brand, I ordered a TC-12 Trinity distortion for 25 euro's (it was a sale). It is a Boss DS-1 clone WITH Keeley mod. Had one of these long ago and still missing it. The little TC-112 does the trick really good! Not a subtle overdrive, almost fuzzlike. But unlike my numorous fuzzboxes, this one goes great with my Topanga reverb.

ENO and Mooer also make a little OCD clone. There are some youtube comparisations online (for the Mooer), the original has a little more brilliance to it, but costs 5 times more!

I've got my Soul Food dialed in on a new recording right now. What I really like about it is that you can dial it in to where it sounds almost exactly like your clean signal then adjust any amount of boost or dirt into the signal. No other pedal I have used has been like that. They all instantly add color or dirt no matter how clean you tried to set them. I did spend some time just slightly tone shaping to give me just the slightest amount of grunt with the drive set to 8:30, the tone at 11:30 and the volume at 11:30. Unity gain on this for me is around 10:00 and the tone control is neutral at 12:00. The tone control acts as a treble boost above 12 or a cut below. Using it as a treble boost makes for some fantastic drip. I also ran it through my Marshalls as a transparent treble boost and it sounded fantastic also. This one is a keeper!

I have a Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive. It has knobs for volume, gain, bass and treble. When I set the bass and treble to 0 it really gives the guitar + reverb tank a good drive tone without the shrill and/or mud.

Well said Stratdancer, the beauty of these is that you retain the sound of your amp more than.
El Camello if your Transparent Overdrive is the pre lawsuit first version, then your Transparent Overdrive is a Timmy clone. Those pedals sound great. My handmade Tim started out as a Transparent Overdrive but I got it rehoused. That was a mistake. Fortunately I found a local builder who rebuilt the circuit/chip and it's now even more like a Timmy.
I don't know why Danelectro built those with knobs on the front of the pedal. Good pedal though.

For those of you who use the EHX Soul Food, do you guys have it stand alone or have the JHS mod for it?

The Soul Food is really good, right out of the box. It's the best band-for- the=buck out there. That said, I had mine modified by JHS, and is even better. It's a lot more versatile. It has the toggle switch for three clipping circuits: original Soul food, open clipping, and Germanium diode which is similar to a Klon. They also install a pot on the side that is a bass contour. For me, the $45.00 for the mod was well worth it.

Bob

I use Xotic AC plus, good both for boosting clean signal as well as adding some grit and dirt without losing clarity and heavy compressing

45.00 makes the mod well worth it it sounds. How long did it take for them to turn it around. At this point living without it isn't an option for me. Would have to plan that one in the future.

I attribute the Soul Food to giving me the edge to my tone on our latest Kahuna Kings recording. This is the first time using it in the studio. Volume at 11:30, Tone at 11:30 and Drive at 8:30. I can't say enough about the Soul Food!

Wow, well done sir! Just liked you guys on facebook.
Moonlight Point floored me. Will definitely be checking more of your music.
I am ordering a Soul Food today.

Excellent @stratdancer

Now the SoulFood has peaked my interested as a light overdrive/break up the amp a tad when we have to be lower volume.

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the kudos! We are a genre full of tone and talent. I feel lucky to be able to contribute! I have been looking for a decent dirt pedal for a couple of years. I actually took Jake up on his recommendation of it. I know Badger is going to be getting one soon also.
