I searched youtube with the Japanese translation of "Surf Coasters" and found a couple of videos I haven't noticed before.

I'm guessing the first video is the original Surf Coasters before Nobuhiro Kurita and Naotaka Seki joined forces.

The second video i'm not even sure this is Shigeo! Bing translates this poorly as "1998","Bulls Eye" and "Blu".

WOW! That's footage from the TV talent show that launched the Surf Coasters! Look how young Shigeo looks there!

It is DEFINITELY Shigeo! And the song is indeed titled Bull's Eye, written by Danny Hamilton, who also wrote War of the Satellites and Diamond Head, I think. A bunch of stuff for the Ventures. And that's Kuri on bass, probably shortly after he joined.

Those are really INCREIBLE finds, crumble! Wow! Thank you!

Very cool crumble! Very weird, as I was listening to Shigeo's solo album as I read this thread! I have seen the second video before, but hadn't seen the first one yet.

Nice find Crumble! Apparently Shigeo and co. were robbed by some crooner though! They looked like they brought their A-game along with a sweet Guyatone too... what lousy judges! Laughing

Wow what a score! They're killing it! Sounds like that's the very performance of 'Dolphins' that's included on the Fly Up Best-Of comp - neat to see the actual footage.

I'm calling BS on those judges too. We all know these guys won round 8 Laughing

I'm getting more and more into The Surf Coasters as it's a band I never really gave attention before. Any suggestion about wich album I need to have ?

As for albums, seek the first one and "Surf Attack", which, IMO, is their best.

The first video above is the original line up, featuring Tomo Sato on bass. He wrote most of the songs on the first album, and really started and ran the band. I'd love to talk to him someday.

The first album was "Surf Panic '95", right?

As great as the various albums of the Surf Coasters are: I find myself putting on their live recordings more often, but then again I do have a thing for live recordings in general. Anyway, check it out:

As for the videos: The whole story of the Surf Coasters getting known through a TV show always seemed rather strange to me. It just seemed like something that could never happen on this planet. And strangely enough, seeing it myself now (at least bits of it) did not really change this impression much. I am bewildered somehow. Duh

My favorites by the Surf Coasters are Surfside Village and Surfdelic, though I strongly second Surf Attack as well as the two best-ofs (Surf Panic '95 was indeed their first album, but I personally don't think that one was among their best - YMMV). All of these are probably not going to be easy to find, and if you do, be prepared to pay Japan import prices - meaning, $$$! But they really are worth it!

The very first i heard of the Surf Coasters was Live at the Double Down Saloon 03/06/05 Archive recording, In fact it was the first modern day surf band i'd ever heard. I became a Surf Coasters fan instantly - Hook, line and sinker!

"So they can smoke while they play" !
"So they can have some Ass Juice" !!
"You know Playstation, Musashiden" ?

And then they play at like 100mph and stop on a dime, the reverb gushes forward and the crowd go Oooooooooooh!

I wish was there that night, it sounded like so much fun.

Great finds Crumble. I had seen the 2nd one but not the first. That was 1994? Wow, Shigeo looks so young!

Here's a couple more Surf Coasters Videos.

Vocal tune with a splash of Diamond Head and The Clash.

Plenty more oldies if you search with: サーフコースター and click "Upload Date" in the filter option.

Funny timing, thanks for posting these. I was researching and getting ready to $nag $ome of their music. That first set of vids posted was great, from that 'talent' show like Star Search "Ebisu-Onsen". They kicked butt.

Why doesn't Eastwood make a Korean version of that Guyatone? THAT would sell, no doubt.

Surf Coasters are so awesome, so quintessentially Japanese, with perfect technical brilliance and panache.
