Ivan,
I was wondering where in blazes you found that video of my son and me as it is buried deep in the bowels of youtube. Then I realized I sent you a Christmas card with mention of it by Mrs. J' Mo. Getting old stinks.
Anyway, Some background:
The video was shot at the annual Ventures Fest that is held in
Crumm(y) Lynne, PA. each October. My son got a lot of compliments from many of the participants for his bass guitar work. He is a diligent, focused son. The poor kid woodshedded with me for 2-3 days straight to get the bass parts that I showed him down.(How would you like to be in that situation?)
So my son and I rehearsed this Straitjackets number - Pacifica - many times; but the backing band - they are called Bongo Straits and hail from Chicago (I call them "the Chi Outfit") just winged it. We had no rehearsal time together. What you see is first and only take.

While my son and I often play together at my place, this was the first time we ever played in public. Had to happen sometime, I guess.

There may be some additional videos coming up from the Fest on youtube of me playing "Girl from Ipanema" and "Bulldog" acoustically with Bob Spalding of The Ventures. He usually attends the Fest.

Thanks for the compliments.. Happy New Year

Cool thread!

I've resolved to just be more musical in general, so I've got a long list of goals for 2016. Outside of surf I want to continue learning and getting comfortable with the piano (which I picked up this past year), build my embouchure for the trumpet (also this year), get comfortable with sight reading, and learn more and more music theory.

Surf: I've been writing new Deadbeats material lately and want to continue so we have a full LP's worth of songs (or more!) by the end of 2016. The band will be split up across the country so I want to make a couple visits home for focused practice to keep momentum moving forward. And I want to write not just more, but better songs: new ideas, new sources of inspiration, new sounds, more time and care... then record!

Just to finish writing, demoing, and recording a new album for The KBK. Progress has been made.

THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary.

Get the recording stuff set up so that it works. I spent some time in the last couple months getting everything set up. Built a double Lack rack, etc. Put it all together, downloaded Reaper (it was getting to be a pain to use Audacity), tested it all. Then I expanded a bit with patch bays, snakes, etc. Took it all down, rewired it all, put it back together. Except that my creaky old MIDI patchbay no longer appears to work, and I only got it partially fixed. I can probably fix it, but it would be a PITA. Looking for a new old one (I don't much like the ones that require a computer). Failing that, I got enough of a look inside that I could probably clone the functionality easily enough (if you consider designing circuitry easy. Since I went to college for that, it wouldn't be impossible.)

Once that's working, do some recording. I have a backlog of songs.

Guitar-wise, if you remember, the last time I posted progress, I said I went from incompetent to embarrassing. So I'll go for a little less embarrassment this year. I may have to set up a specific practice regimen to accomplish this.

I've changed the way I approach my practice and song writing time plus the location in my studio for that. Rather than spending that time in the live room and having to warm up tubes and make a big deal about it every time I want to strum the guitar or have an idea I have setup in the studio office.

I just purchased an original Vox AD 60 valvetronix which is just a killer practice amp. I will do a review with sound for SG101 at some point because this amp is a perfect low cost amp for surf and here's why. The other vt's are not like this and don't have anything near the features this amp provides. I have created a great AC15 model complete with spring reverb and tape echo then duplicated that with tremolo. I have also created a nice twin reverb model with spring reverb and duplicated it with tremolo also. These are great sounds at a bedroom volume and perfect for practice and song sketching with just a guitar and a chord.

I've also got the Digitech Trio in here now and it's all ready to go for quick song idea's and more productive playing time.

  1. Somehow get album #1 released.

  2. Wrap up album #2 to release by summer.

  3. Create an honest to Dick Dale studio.

Hey! I just did #3- took a spare bedroom and moved EVERYTHING out and moved EVERYTHING in. The second everything refers to all musical stuff like drums and amps. Even did some sound dampening with wall hangings. So now I have a space. I'll post pics sometime. If's not SUN studios or anything but its mine. And the sound is soooooooo much better especially the drums.

Right, but it sounds very good! You and your son should be very proud.

Here's to it happening many many more times in the future! I speak from personal experience - as you know - and it's a wonderful thing to be able to do this.

There may be some additional videos coming up from the Fest on youtube of me playing "Girl from Ipanema" and "Bulldog" acoustically with Bob Spalding of The Ventures.

Great! Post them to SG101 when they're available.

Thanks for the compliments.. Happy New Year

I'm planning on writing and recording a second album for The Lurids, but the most fun will be finally learning to play the drums.

  • I want to take The Spoils on a short summer tour of the southeast, our drummer has relatives in Virginia and I'd like to make 3 or 4 stops on the way there for their family vacation.

  • Finish a full set of new originals (halfway there!) and record it. And find some way to release it that makes sense.

  • Play roughly one show a month, alternating between local venues and out-of-town regional shows.

  • Get more people involved in booking and hosting Second Saturday Surf, including seeing if we can get sponsors who could help us promote and pay bands a little more. (Plus I'd like to convince the Nomad Bar owner to install a PA so I don't have to bring mine every time!)

Most of the same goals apply for my non-surf instrumental band, Math Patrol: short tour, new record, steady local shows.

For my punk/indie karaoke show, I want to do significantly more long-weekend tours and break 100 shows overall this year.

And finally I want to record at least four songs from my silly solo project called The Nineties, where I do short power-pop style songs with lyrics riffing off what band names like Stone Temple Pilots and Better Than Ezra might actually mean.

SANDBLAST! will continue to grow, explore, and figure out just the heck it means to be SANDBLAST! That and to record our first CD or something vaguely equivalent. Hopefully play gigs further afield and avoid the same mistakes that other fabulous and inexplicably successful musicians make. Wink

Cool

My goal is to finally finish the tracks I started last year. Hopefully write some new ones, too. Good ones, hopefully. I'd like to release 5 new tracks this year, in the hope I may release one!

Ultimately to find the time to practice a lot more, it's been hard to find recently.

It'll be interesting to come back at the end of the year and compare how many ambitions were realised!

In addition to the release our new album (feb 12!):
1. Play out a lot more in support of the album
2. Continue writing songs, and hopefully have another album ready to
record next fall.
3. Maybe hit the west coast this year.

I think I'm going to do a vinyl EP this year. And clean house of every piece of gear that I haven't used in the previous year. Starting to amass a large pile of junk.

Well, I wrote my first surf song on New Year's Eve. So my goals for this year are pretty broad. Write more music, practice as much as possible, learn some covers to help improve my skills (I don't really like playing covers that much in bands). Other than that, get a Surfy Bear FET Reverb unit built.

I'm rediscovering my first musical love...the bass. I picked up a cheapie used Precision and I'm using the Classic 101 list to build repertoire. I'm trying to get a new song under my belt every few days, and so far it's a blast getting inside of tunes this way.

Just wondering what others hope to accomplish musically in the new year?

Hi Web. Which Classic 101 list?
Cheers Phil

My goals are:

  • Buy a new amp
  • Learn more songs
  • Possibly find a band to play in
  • Build a maple neck Jag out with a VM body and one of the new Duo Sonic/Mustang maple necks
