Permalink Small amp for NYC apartment

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I'm looking at the Carvin Vintage16 16/5w pentode/triode amp. Has anyone used this amp? If so, how does the reverb sound? Anyone have any recommendations?

Coolcat

I use a fender frontman in my office. It's small, you can plug headphones into it, and used ones are very inexpensive. I've thought about maybe looking at a fender g-dec with all the goodies on it but for now I'm happy with my setup.

Pipeline

It's gotta be a tube amp, have reverb, be small enough in wattage to use in a small NY apartment and not so expensive I have to sell my '66 LeMans to afford it.

Coolcat

Look into a Fender Blues Junior. 15 Watts, Tubes, Real REVERB. Won't cost you an arm and a Le Mans!

I's look for a Reverend Goblin, maybe a small Ampeg Jet (or Reverb-o-Jet?)...a Fender Princeton Reverb would be the Holy Grail, but they are getting pricier. On the cheaper end, I'd also suggest the traynor YCV20 - great sounding lil tube amp.

How's the reverb on the Goblin? I've heard great things about those amps. Also heard great things about the Traynors, but 20 watts is way too much volume for my small space.

Thanks for all your input, guys!

.....just get a Dual Showman and a reverb tank......piece of cake to move in and out of small NYC apartments (especially buildings with no elevators) and the neibors will love ya! Wink

Here's a page with some clips of the Kingsnake, essentially the Goblin's "big brother." I have a Hellhound head with a 212 cab that I can't live without (especially with the Fender reverb tank). Without the tank, the reverb is very, very mild on the 'hound, which was a feature they upgraded for the Kingsnake and Goblin amps, which sounds alot wetter.

Oh, and I also second the Fender Blues Jr suggestion - very nice little amp. Likely cheaper than the Goblin, too, as they've been discontinued for about a year.

I don't frequent the Shadows sites nearly as much as I used to, but I noticed that quite a few people over there are raving about these small Carvins - apparently they sound really good, and capture a lot of that awesome vibe of the classic AC15s - for a tiny price! Haven't played one, so have no idea how close they get to the Fender sound or how good the reverb is.

I had a Carvin Bel-Air (50 watt combo amp from Carvin's Classic Series) which was very nice (and very loud and very heavy hense the had part.) I gave it some "brain surgery" and removed the overdrive pedal they built into the gain channel to give it more tube overdrive and make it sound less "metal."

The Carvin was definately more Vox-ie than Fender-ie. Carvin does something to "improve" their reverb circuit which takes away almost all of the qualities a "Surf" guitar player would like. The reverb sounds good for other things but it just isn't right for surf at all.

The reverb on my Reverend Kingsnake is very nice, usable all around the dial. It doesn't have the drip of a tank but I like it a lot. I got some "alone and loud" time with it last night for the first time (just got it last week) and it is definately the most versatile amp I've ever owned. It is really too bad Reverend got out of the amp business.

I would imagine that the Goblin 5-15 is probably excellent too. Here is the last new one I've seen "in the wild"...

I've got a Fender Blues Junior and a Reverend Goblin
(among many other amps), and the Goblin's tone
absolutely blows away the tone of the Blues Jr. So does
it's reverb. For an onboard reverb, it's quite good, but
obviously cannot touch a stand alone Fender reverb tank.
Don't get me wrong, the Blues Jr is a fine little practice
amp, but the Reverend is exceptional. I can't recommend
it highly enough. True Tone Music in Santa Monica, Ca.
has a few Goblin's left. It's a light little sucker. It won't
cost much to ship it. The Reverend costs a bit more than
a Blues Jr or a Traynor, but it is well worth the extra $$$.
There are a lot of good little practice amps out there.
Good luck in your quest....

(I haven't touched the Blues Jr since I did an A/B comparison
to the Goblin).

Would this be the same Fender Blues Jr. that you said has been discontinued? (The page is from their current site.)
