don't know if anyone has seen this. this could be the end of some smaller radio stations streaming, including my local station.

Got a notice on it last night. Got the impression that if some high dollar
types don't rescue LIVE365 before Jan. 31, then they are gone. Paid subscribers can their money back if the place collapses. Will miss your show Carol!

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

Man, that stinks.

Wondering how much of this is revenue side (economics, business model) vs. corporate/large competitor muscles which is making things untenable. In other words, would a truck load of cash make it sustainable, or is that really just kicking the can down the road a little?

From the article:

The web radio show favourite said new royalty rates set by the Copyright Royalty Board will no longer make provisions for small webcasters to opt for a percentage of the rates.

The current provisions end at the end of 2015. The absence of this licence will make legally streaming copyrighted musical content prohibitively expensive for many small- to mid-sized internet broadcasters, said the body.

2-edged blades cut both ways.

Question for those on the other side of the Atlantic (truly don't know). Is this stuff part of the larger initiatives/treaties that have been happening which, for example, keep some youtube streaming from reaching folks in some countries in the EU? Or is this simply a separate decision by the UK?

Youtube streaming being blocked has to do with rights, generally music and rights don't coexist. Television works on a 'rights' basis and sell the rights to their programming to different channels in different countries.

The UK is particularly stringent on their rights as BBC programming is funded by the state/taxpayers. Therefore making it available for free to non-UK citizens is not particularly okay.

Thanks for the explanation.

It seems that there was a choice to make and the governing board went in the non-facilitating direction. Some other (albeit quick) research indicates they were headed in this way of thinking the last time they re-did the license period, with the "basic unit of a willing seller" being benchmarked as a record company. Things that make you say "hunh." Guess I should've asked, 'cui bono?'

Does this (now or downstream) have an affect on a band's music being viewable/listenable on their own website? (Or could be I'm just one of those whose hairs stand up when I hear "we're from the Government and we're here to help.")

Carol,
I sure hope we don't lose your (and others as well) show.

Cheers,
Jeff

this note from our station computer guy........

'We are licensed as a non commercial webcaster and pay royalties directly to SoundExchange. A quick read of the copyright royalty board (CRB) ruling seems to indicate that our rate will stay the same. If Live365 goes under we'll have to find another streaming host.'

seems like more of a pain than anything, so for the time being, our station is still streaming.

KFJC does not use Live365 so among other things that means that there are alternatives.
