Permalink Old Man Playing Fast Music Leads to Old Man Wearing BENGAY

There are a lot of really good surf bands with highly skilled musicians that put on great shows for the enthusiastic audiences that show up to their performances. Most of the players I’ve seen live are close to amazing if you take the time to watch and listen to what they are doing (Mark Kuhn is one example). On the other hand, some of us (me at least) got into surf because it was fast and fun to play and knew nothing about the rich tradition that preceded them (I’ve since learned to appreciate it). My musical roots came from playing punk rock but like surf music, I got into punk because it was fast and fun to play and not due to any great love of Punk. “Tower of Swine”, an old punk band from college got back together on December 19th to play our first gig together in over 30 years. There were some glitches and “what the…” moments but it was without doubt fast and fun to play and the audience was great. Considering that Voodoo Court is toast, or at least a stale piece of bread sitting in a broken toaster, and I have played nothing but blues the last year or so (not fast but occasionally fun to play), it was great to be able to play something loud and at ramming speed even if the 5 months getting ready for it lead my having to wear heating pads, wrist supports, and BENGAY for my old man shoulders. The attached video is the complete performance of this reunion show. I know that this music is likely not much appreciated on this forum but I can’t be the only former surf player who got into it because the act of playing it was fun as hell. Happy New Year.

I was a little miffed when the video started... That's fast punk Confused

Of course, that didn't last long (thank goodness!)

Nice work by the gang bringing the speed and angst of 30 years ago back to life! Well, maybe save the new beer and bacon song. Despite my love for both, that one needs a little overhaulin' to fit in this band and set. Maybe along with picking up the pace, maybe rail against big business and big government ruining the nations food supply with GMO raised/fed swines (see what I did there Wink ) and bash the breweries for selling out to InBev for the payday.

Seriously though, good times! Kinda impressed y'all were so tight with that tempo. Almost too tight for punk even. Nicely done!

Thanks and good idea about modernizing more of the songs. The singer revised some of the lyrics to "Senior Citizen" to match his (our) now senior citizen status. Revising "Cold War Ballad" to coincide with today's issues would be a great idea as well. Maybe in another 30 years. The singer and bass player are both from back east. They flew out a couple of days before the show. It would be nice to do this again.

Loved the show, thanks for sharing. fast and fun is perfect for me^^

Thanks for the nice feedback. I'm going to pass on the "OMHC" to the guys.
