i have just recently got infected by surf guitar and i was wondering if any of you had advice as a good place to start. I have been playing guitar awhile, but have gotten a little rusty due school and work obligations slowing me down. So anything to start me off easy would be good. Good basic songs? techniques advice? Must listen to bands? I'm pretty new to all of this so anything is welcomed.

thanks!

I often use 'Pipeline' for teaching purposes, it's very easy to play. Wipe Out is even easier. Those two are a good place to start.

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

There are a few surf music books that come with CD's of backing tracks. A very good way to learn. I started that way and now I'm in 2 surf bands.

The essential gear recipe might go like this: Fender everything, single coils, flatwound heavy strings, and an outboard reverb.

Cool hey bear, how yall are?? start at the beginning dude, pipiline and wipeout and move on to 1st wave material. learn all the guitar and bass parts to the songs---i started with a 33/45 single play phonograph and picked out what i could and hung out with other players and watched the bands play. i learn off cds now and just use the cd palyer as an electronic phonograph. little bit of work to get rollin but it picks up!! peace

Here are a few past threads on what's worth listening to.

I'd suggest looking through these threads and reading Phil Dirts reviews at reverb central to see what interests you. Good luck, get hooked. Wink

I don't really agree with the 10 song surf foundation. I can only play 3 surf songs total and I definitely play surf guitar and consider myself pretty capable. Just get some good surf gear and fool around with getting some cool tones out of it.

I got you beat Jake... I can't even play 1 surf song total anymore. Surf music is like playing "sounds" more than music sometimes.

I aint kidding, I got the song down in a day. Still working on the picking ofcourse, but it makes my band mates jealouse when I play it. Very Happy

Well Misirlou has depths, you can work on it for years and continue to find ways to improve or personalize it. I don't find that with Pipeline.
