"It all sounds the same" - this is the response I get from a girl I know as well as from her sister and mother when I let them listen to Surf music or play it myself.

Even her boyfriend, who is a good friend of mine as well and is a rock bass player. Yesterday I send him three videos to listen:

Shockwave, Bitch boys
Surfin' St. Helens, Volcanos
Badge Of Honor,Satan's Pilgrims

and asked him to pick the one he liked best.
He said it all sounds the same to him and that he didn't even realize these were songs by different bands. . .

Does anyone get the same response from his friends/mates who are not involved in Surf music?

Cheers,
Mark.

Or more importantly, have any of you ever said that about a genre you don't listen to regularly?

People get different things out of different types of music. A regular person listening to surf music, likely, isn't listening to the same things we listen to.

It is very easy for surf music to sound the same, especially as so many people try to emulate a specific sound.

A while back, I had my nephew with me in the car, and I had some Bambi Molesters on. I said, oh yeah, um, I like surf music. He listened, sort of smiled, and started imitating a twangy guitar: der der der der...

I felt self-conscious and subtly transitioned the music to something else. It sort of surprised me that someone could hear that, and that was what they took away from it.

But I have to admit that many other genres leave me with a similar reaction--even some that I am more than casually familiar with...i.e. old-timey and Hawaiian slack key.

Luckily the people that don't immediately identify with surf music are a very small minority. HAW!!!!!!!

Yep. Which is why, as the years have gone by, I try not to be judgmental in that way. As a friend once said, "It's all just vibrations in the air, kids."

The Reverbivores - we're local favorites!

The reaction I get the most is: 'What is surf music?" followed by 'Cool, I like the Beach Boys!'

Which is why I always say "instrumental surf music".

It grows on you. I mean them.
I know classical musicians that all Rock'n'Roll sounds to them like angry bees in a jar. I get it, it does.

lol. I still get the "... like the Beach Boys" reaction sometimes; apparently "instrumental" is a very big word for some people. (and I really like the Beach Boys)

But I get what you're saying. Several genres sound the same to me, probably because if it doesn't grab me immediately I switch off critical thinking and go back to pumping gas into the car. (Which is too bad 'cause I'm probably missing some interesting melodies.) Mainstream media output is generationally targeted; alway$ ha$ been.

I make no apologies anymore. If someone doesn't like surf, stiff shit. I blare it in my car and I love it! If a passenger makes a negative comments, I tell them to use the door. "But the car is still moving!" I reply, "And your point being?"

Either you surf, or you fight.

hahaha we have the same thing here, but luckily in Indonesia we have channel tv program called 'mancing mania (fishing mania)" which every episode they play pipeline, missirlou etc as a backsound. so everyone who ask what is surf music as a small talk we can easily say like 'mancing mania' backsound.

I get the "Beach Boys" thing, or "Dick Dale". I say yeah that's part of it, but there is so much more. Personally, I think surf was intelligently designed to appeal to the over 50 year old male with thinning hairlines (see my most recent photos) and a love for twangy, echo-ey and crashy noises Laughing
The only place we get a great cross section of listeners (including, get this, 20-30 year olds of the other gender) is in New York City, or at Pool Parties.

Surf.The most dangerous of genres...

Well, snap! - If only someone had told me I'd live to be fifty (and well over) with thinning hair in 1960...

I think it's the same mental process that gives us great lines like, "all Chinese look the same," and, in China, "all gwailos look the same."
