Jake,
Who's on the cover?

Happy Sunsets!

Brigitte Bardot. There isn't a specific reason we chose her. I was just struck by the photo, that sense of malaise broken by the slightest of smiles. I also feel the image defies being placed into a specific era, same goes with the back image of the Chrysler Building taken in 1932. I want our album to be taken in that same sense.

Just paypal-ed. Hope to be the first in Canada (or at least Nova Scotia)

Only ‘Verb Can Break Your Heart review By DaVinci Flinglestein

To get right to the point this is really really good album. Recorded in 2008 it’s sure to be old news to most of you but being the last one in line never stopped me from getting on the bus.

You don’t need some review to find out if this is any good or not. Jake has very helpfully provided the link, the samples , all your purchase options right there on the link under his signature on any post he posts.

I mean this is not 1974 where you’re stuck in some backwater town a 100 miles from BFE and the only link you have to civilization is your brother’s discarded Columbia Records catalogs and your monthly subscription to CREEM magazine where you promise yourself you won’t ever trust the Christgau Consumer Guide again, not after that awful Roxy Music purchase you made and after listening to the unbelievably lame ‘Mother of Pearl’ for the 3rd time just to prove to yourself that such a trite piece of notes and pauses actually existed you poured airplane glue all over the disc, let it harden and then RETURNED the damn thing to the Mason’s Dept store where you would later be apprehended for shoplifting and got Nazareth’s RAMPANT album in exchange and then, satisfied with its noise level you could rest easy knowing that NO ONE would ever have to listen to that particular piece of saccharine vinyl again.

You don’t have to go through all that. Click on Jake’s link, peruse a few songs and then buy it. I think it’s underpriced so throw an extra buck or two his way cause you know it’s the right thing to do.

The first thing I noticed (aside from the cover) were the melodies. This album is littered with them. Catchy catchy catchy. And excellent playing throughout with tons of faultless trem picking. And all of it subservient to the songs and those melodies. There's a nice little guitar dual mixed in somewhere, I think it was on side B and it adds just the right amount of spice.

If I have a complaint it's the lack of information on the vinyl. There’s a song list on the back of the sleeve but it’s laid out in an artsy/fartsy manner that takes a bit of effort to decipher. It’s really a problem for side B cause then I found myself counting the record grooves backwards to establish just what song I was listening to. There’s nothing about the band as in no names or instruments played (I heard trumpet on several songs which gave off a south of the border vibe). But I can’t really fault the packaging cause the Bridgette Bardot cover is so sweet that all else is forgiven.

The last thing I’ll say is this album has got one of those songs on it which from here on out I’ll refer to as That Song. You know That Song- it’s the one you discover on your purchase that keeps calling you back over and over. Years, even decades after an albums’ purchase you know you’ll play it again because That Song is on it and nothing replaces the experience of hearing That Song. When you need to hear it you will go to it like a homing pigeon to its coop like a dog to its bone.

Alone With My Principles is the That Song song. Simple, plaintive, evocative. It is a song of promise and longing and it wraps the listener with a soft blankie of notes and measures. On about my 6th or 7th listen it hit me- MUST LEARN TO PLAY! Which I did, at least the refrain cause I had to get to work. Then I thought- Imagine this on a 12 string!

I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy a Dano 12 string for years (the first guitar I played was a 12) but no- I would need an acoustic 12, something like they use for the Rooftop Singers ‘Walk Right In’. Yeah.

I better stop right there. This is getting to be an expensive album. Did I mention the price was right? I mean as long as you don’t factor in the price of a new 12 string. It’s a steal. Not like stealing from Mason’s either. This is the good steal. Always go with the good steal. I sure learned my lesson you can bet your boots (and heart).

Exactly!

And here is the backside!

Like I said, challenging. Looks great though! Side note: There I was, flashlight in hand, reading glasses on, counting grooves, figuring it all out. You only make that kind of effort if it's worth it. Also, one of the songs I'm thinking it's side A, has a strong Telstar feel. Keeps popping back in my head.

And thanks!

Curious about your 12-string comment though. We didn't use any 12-string!

Oh I know. Don't hear that much 12 string in the surf world. I'm already coming up with alternate versions of the song. I mean, if I were ever to cover a 'Verb song that would be it. I'm hearing it in 12 string.

Don't take this as criticism of my favorite song on the album. It's inspiring.

That'd be sweet though, do it man! Get a 12 and use it. We double some of our guitars, so I wasn't sure if you were hearing that. We don't do an octave up or down when we double though.

I take no criticism at all! I really appreciate it man!

Then let's agree to agree. You know that album we're talkin bout? AWESOME! Angel

And thanks for the picks!!!
