Permalink When surf music was uncool (as if)

I reckon I wrote this tune in the 70s when I was about 14 years old. At the time (and it got worse in the 80s) instro surf music really uncool..

Thanks Martin! What a nice Monday morning start. As I mentioned in the 'Revenge' restock thread, this was the album that got me to back to surf. Delved back into The Atlantics, then back forward to your solo albums as I learned of that history - multiple circular journeys ever since.

Bar band days are long gone but wish we'd had this (instead of the obligatory Wipeout) back then. It's eminently danceable too.

I'm a huge Martin Cilia fan, his guitar technique, tone and arrangements are as good as it gets, IMO.

Martin's interpretation of surf music is dynamic and contemporary without being overly "trad". Powerful, edgy, expertly played and most of all, great melody lines.

Kudos, Martin, you are indeed a treasure to those of us who appreciate the Real Deal.

That's a really great track, Martin! It's really interesting you wrote it in the '70s, since I always thought that it sounds like some of the Shadows tracks on their 1977 album "Tasty", which is terribly underrated and almost never talked about, even among Shadows fans. (Do you know that album at all, Martin?) I'm attaching two tracks for comparison's sake.

Hey Ivan, yes you're spot on. I had the Tasty album (actually still have all my old albums stored at my Mum's house on the other side of Australia) I can remember really liking their version of "Walk Don't Run". I thought the drum sounds were the best I'd heard since "The Rise & Fall of Flingel Bunt". I also remember that the album cover was black and really showed up any fingerprints.

I do have an early demo of "Atlantic Echo" somewhere? It had a different intro to The Atlantics version. From memory the original demo had volume swells done with the volume knob on the strat to emulate Hank's volume pedal.
