Permalink Song Question - Moment of Truth

New Topic

This version of “Moment of Truth”, that the Longboards are doing (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=78118449), is pretty close to the version I’ve heard most bands play over the years.

Is it the Dave Myer’s version ?

That's the Original Surfaris version.

Matter is just energy waiting to happen.

just as well I asked then !

pineapple_geoff

Is it the Dave Myer’s version?

No the Myers version has a yaky sax in it. The Long Boards version doesn't use the sax, it has a organ.

I haven't ever heard the 'Original Surfaris' version so I can't speak to that.
I actually like the 'Eliminators' version better than the Long Board version.

Joel

I've had the same question on my mind for a while. Most modern surf guitar based bands play a simpler version to the original - Dave Myers? I haven't heard the Original Surfaris but the Surf Teens version sound great to my ears. I wonder who was the first to re-arrange the song.

The versions by Dave Myers and by the Surf Teens each lack one part of the original version and could thus be called simpler. But Dave Myers & the Surftones added a lot to the song by alternating between guitar and saxophone throughout the song. To me that's the best version from the 60s.

Here is a ahort analysis. It's best to look at it while listening to the songs linked at the end of the post.

Original Surfaris
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse A (guitar, double picked)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse B (sax)
Intro (sax)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Chorus (guitar, overlayed by Verse B (sax))
Intro (sax and guitar)
Verse B (sax)

Dave Myers & the Surftones (lacking Verse A)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse B (guitar, double picked)
Verse B (sax)
Intro (sax)
Chorus (guitar)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse B (sax)
Intro (sax)

Surf Teens (lacking the Chorus)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse A (guitar, double picked)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse B (guitar)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse A (guitar, double picked)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Intro (guitar, double picked)
Verse A (guitar)

Okay, chorus might not be the best term here, but it differs in length from the verses, and I can't think of a better term right now.

My favorite version actually is the one by Jon & the Nightriders, which really combines all the parts together in a very tasteful way (my old band also played the song in their arrangement).

Hey Simon thanks for taking the time to explain all the differences in song structures. The first time I heard Moment of Truth was through the Pounding Drums DVD with Matt Quilter taking guitar honours. The tune really grabbed my attention but when I started digging for the original I came across various versions which didn't sound the same and promptly gave up! I like the Nightriders also ..and the Longboards version for when I need a shot in the arm! But I think the Surf Teens is the template for me to learn from.

Great song, good history lesson- thanks Simon. I would have played whatever version ended up in my record collection.

My favorite is still from one of my mostest favoritest bands EV-uh. Sax in The Eliminators' version would seem to have been a natural, but this is just a well-done job anyway. Much to like from Joe & Company.

The Surf Teens version is definitely the darkest one, the bass line is different if I am hearing correctly. I spent some time on YouTube to look for The Apemen version from "Are you Being Surfed?" to no avail. That is my favorite version. Don't bother with the sloppy live videos, they don't sound at all like the EP version.

Probably available elsewhere (???), but the Original Surfaris version can be heard/had on the new Birth of Surf Vol. 3. Cool

The song is featured on the "Surfari" LP, but I don't know if that is still available. (See this old thread about it.)

The only (older) CD source that I am aware of is the re-issue of the First Wave comp "Surf's Up at Banzai Pipeline" by Sundazed, which is out of print but sometimes pops up used for a reasonable price.
