Permalink Fender vintage pbass pickups

New Topic

I want to swap the stock pickups in my MIM Fender pbass with something more vintage. Fender offers three pickup options. Do any of you have any experience with these and what are your thoughts.

Fender pure vintage 58 pick p/u's
Fender custom shop 62 p/u's
Fender pure vintage 63 p/u's

Thanks.

I have the Custom Shop 62 p/u's in my American Standard P Bass and they sound great. They came stock with those.

Jonpaul swears by his 62 reissue P Bass and I believe that is what comes in that bass as well. Maybe he will chime in. He knows a lot more about basses than I do.

The Counselors

While I have nothing against Fender pickups, when I re-did the wiring in my MIM p-bass a couple of months ago I installed a Duncan SPB-1. In fact, I did the exact same re-wiring and pickup install on a friend's MIM bass Nov 2014 and he and I share the opinion that it is nicely balanced, responsive, warm pickup.

I don't know how "custom shop" they are, but I had several P-basses with the '62 pickup that came in the American Vintage series and to me that was the standard. I also had a Mike Dirnt signature P-bass that had a "Custom Shop '59" pickup (which I think was actually was supposed to be the pickup that came in the old team built CS '59 p-basses, though I'm not sure) and it was my favorite and best-sounding p-bass.

I also had a '57 American Vintage series that sounded different. Not sure if that pickup is still available (they were supposedly different) but it sounded cool; more treble and definition...but it was also a different bass.

All that being said, I liked my standard MIM p-bass pickup so much while I had one that I decided not to change it, and I co-owned it with my Dirnt sig.

Thanks for the replies!

I have a back up MIM pbass that has Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders SPB-3 in it and I notice a greater tonal difference over my stock MIM definitely.

Most reviews I've read suggest the Fender 62s as the favorable p/u.

On Fenders website the custom shop 62s ($120) are fitted on the "american" made models 2012-present and they also have the fender original pbass p/us ($90) that are on the "American vintage" series of basses. But they seem to have the same specs. Hmmm.

For $115 you can get either the standard vintage or overwound P-bass pickups from Jason Lollar that IMO are superior to anything that Fender is selling. Jason's PU's are handwound.

My opinion is "based" (pun intended) on having owned and played several Fender Precisions for several decades on stage and in studios.

Here's the link to Lollar's site in case you are interested...

If you really want a Fender pickup, my favorite is the new American Vintage '58. It provides a bit more definition than the AVRI '62 or the new AV '63 but still has plenty of girth.
