Here's a simple idea to spread the word on instro surf music.

Make up a mix tape and give it to your friends or anyone who you think might be interested in music. This can be on a CD , USB drive, but keep it simple, make it easy for them.

Say, no more that 20 tracks and don't try to be too cool with song choices, keep it accessible. Save the less commercial tracks for next time, should they want more.

This is how we used to share music in the 70s and turn others onto stuff they might not hear otherwise. I discovered lots of music this way.

Yep, used to do that with cassettes. Have done it with CD's a few times & now have a couple of in-laws and a daughter who are digging on it and a fishing buddy who likes more of the hot-rod oriented stuff. All report they like not having their brain being co-opted by nebulous pop lyrics. The one sister-in-law is a 60-something cello/violin teacher lol and instro surf is reported by daughter to be ear candy when getting through a morning workout.

I thought streaming services have algorithms for discovery? Like you listen to 90% the same stuff as this other guy, but no Surf like he does so we slip in a surf track ans see if you skip it. That’s how I thought it worked. LastFM was trying to do something like that and now there’s Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. I’m not using any of them so I don’t know. They pay musicians lousy and play commercials in exchange for access to your listening habits.

I don't know how long the phrase has been around but it goes something like:

"If something is free, than You are the service."

Not as friendly as just handing someone you know a mix-CD with a smile & having them "give it a listen."

When my non-surf band - one that does typical covers - performs, I give a short preamble about "back in the early 60s Dick Dale was a pioneer of a new form of rock called 'surf music'...some of you know this from the diner scene in in the film Pulp Fiction" (and then hit it).
I've had people come up to me later on to tell me how cool that was, that they never really knew that it was a RnR sub-genre, and that they loved the "fast guitar stuff from Pulp Fiction". People dance and will enjoy it if it is good. Pipeline tends to go over as a "well, time to order another pint" kind of tune.

One has to start somewhere. Dick Dale is a great place to start. Yes

This was exactly my hope with the Brave New Surf comp that I put together back for Double Crown Records in 2012 - something that surf music fans could give to people they knew that might grow to like surf music. It was already 'predesigned', so to speak, for that purpose. That's certainly how I was thinking about that whole CD as I worked on it.

I've given a few of them as gifts over the past few years.
