I once read somewhere that CL was the biggest game changer on the web in the last 10 years or something. It certianly was for my musical endeavors. I decided to start playing again and began checking each day. The only ad that seemed to be anything but classic rock or post core whatever was an exact match: instrumental surf and Ventures group! Playing surf again reminded me of how much I missed it. I got into it so deep that the guys I was jamming with weren't traditional enough for me, so I ran ads for more specific surf sounds. A drummer replied right away who dug what I was talking about. I couple months later a fine bass player answered the call. These guys had never surfed before but after listening to playlists they were hooked. We auditioned a handful of 2nd guitars but non were a good fit. (One guy seemed possible until we found we would have to drive him to and from practice. Another was just a flat out asshole!)

So yes, hit or miss but ultimately a success story and minor life changer. I still won't list anything for sale though - nothing but weirdos!

Muk, I guess I'm the creep because I can't remember the last time I sold anything to anyone who really creeped me out. Only a couple annoyed me, and I made short order of them 'cause I's got plenty o'attitude mese'f!
But that was years ago. In LA, people were very decent. I auditioned on bass for Jetpack & Tahiti Shuttle Experiment (got neither gig, of course) and everyone was really nice, no weirdness. I guess I'm not very sensitive to weird vibes. Or just so off-putting that they bounce back on 'em!

Anyhow, no bassists have called since that fun jam with the drummer (not so fun with the other guitarist, but he bailed). I'm thinking no one in Chicago who follows cl ads knows what surf is. Any suggestions?

CL has been hit or miss for me. We auditioned a drummer for a rock band I was in a few years ago. The guy played one volume, SUPER LOUD! we asked him to tone it down a bit, he got miffed. We emailed back and forth and eventually argued enough that we gave up on him.

For another band we auditioned a percussionist who was awesome and a great guy! Still work with him!

I think like anything else, it's hit or miss. As far as buying and selling gear, I used to do it, now it's too scary. Maybe meet in a public place, but mostly I just avoid it. Too many creeps... Shock

Squink Out!

I've had some success with CL. My most recent band I found on CL, although one of the players in the band also knew me and suggested me as a sub on a gig so it was one of those serendipitous moments. We ended up being ranked the 2nd best cover band in the area but after 2 years of gigging the same tired venues, and dealing with all of the logistics, I had to bail out (not to mention I had some personal issues and I just couldn't dedicate the time I should).

I joined two other bands. Gigged with each only once. One I quit, one said they wanted to try something else. The bass player, who I got along with, ended up quitting not long after me, which I didn't know until:

I had tried a couple of times to get various bands together but nothing solid - a lot of flakes. I finally decided people weren't good enough around this area to play anything difficult nor could anyone sing, so I thought I'd do a 60s "garage" band doing "Wild Thing" and "Louie Louie" type material that was easy to play, mistakes wouldn't be obvious in, and the singing wasn't too demanding. I pulled in a bunch of surf instrumentals to fill the gaps for not singing.

I CLd and found a Singer/Guitarist immediately. He and I got together and he knew a keyboard player/singer. I found someone else's ad that were for a bass player and drummer looking for others. I responded told them we were looking for bass and drums. It turned out to the bass player from the other band that "fired" me - he had quit soon after. So we had an instant band.

The keyboard player was in another band that was gigging and making money, so couldn't put any work in, so we had to ditch her after one gig.

We CLd and found another keyboard player and gigged a bit.

But the normal problems crept in - bass player would get a but tipsy at gigs, drummer didn't know any of the names of the songs and played the wrong tempo for everything, and there were a few he couldn't even learn (Liar Liar, Pants on Fire). The bass player had been playing only three years, but he refused to learn the songs from the CD I gave him (original versions) and instead learned the tunes from some collection of "re-records" he had - many in the wrong key and so on. The guitarist/singer didn't know the difference between major and minor, or regular and sharp, so if you said "C#", he thought C Major, and "C minor" meant back the whole chord shape down a fret. He's one of those guys who played Louie Louie for decades never knowing the V chord was minor (yet, he still gigged plenty!).

Ultimately, I made the mistake of hiring his partner in a duo that performed regularly. Basically, she conspired against me and they ended up firing me from the band I started. Then they broke up.

I've tried CL since, but simply put, people who play music do it as a hobby, or they're losers who can't do anything else. The latter can not hold down regular jobs because they're basically immature and irresponsible, and they're the same way as players. I suppose they still think that attitude is ok in "rock and roll" because that's what they grew up thinking all those bands did. The hobbyists just want to do it for fun, and won't work, don't want to work, or have too many other obligations to work.

Every local CL ad is like "forming a band, we practice every week".

Been there done that. I'm not going over someone's house every week to practice songs that no one else in the band has learned to never play a gig.

St. Evel,
I concur with many of your points, there is 'something wrong' with a lot of people (like me?) who post on cl seeking bandmates. In my line of work, I have to deal with busted people on a regular basis (if you are 'totally OK', you probably don't go to church, unless you are completely conventional and are messed anyhow up without knowing it). This gives me a bit of realism in regard to musicians.

I figure I am probably weird and dysfunctional – the only thing I have going for me is a passion for playing that keeps me trying. I have also learned to play somewhat over the last 35 years, warts and all. Very recently – Monday is my 51st birthday – I am beginning to feel a sense of urgency as though I am abut to run out of time. This gives me more impetus to make something work and not get negative.
You only get once chance with life. I wasted a lot of opportunities, but I want to make good by what I got left.

Squink Out!

It is such a crap shoot. I've done it, off and on, over the years. My town isn't exactly a swinging hub of surf and all that goes with it, so most guitarists seem show up with Laney or Randall amp, a pedal board bigger than my welcome mat and basically just twiddle knobs all night, trying to dial in that elusive Tone™ they never stop talking about.

Drummers have been a similar thing. Nobody around here seems to believe in a small kit and playing simple/understated for the song. Guys show up with gear that would make Alex Van Halen cry with envy. After about 4-5 trips to/from the car, I just lose all heart. I keep waiting for the 30" gong to show up...

Every good (and fun) band I've ever been part of his grown out from friends (back in high school, a couple of times in my 20's, etc.). It's a tough thing to cobble a bunch of total strangers together, especially for something as niche-y and limited-appeal (here, anyway) as surf/instrumental.

I lived in Orange County (and then San Diego) from 1993-2002. If I'd know then what I know now (and was into this music the way I am now), I would've appreciated it more (and probably found some great people to play with).

Not much of a surf culture in Chattanooga, oddly enough. Smile

But if you want to cover some Molly Hatchet and Quiet Riot, you're definitely in the right town.

I'm kinda terrified to conduct any further surf-oriented Craigslist-assisted searches.

But you do save yourself a lot of aggravation and hassle by hammering some things out via phone or email on the front end. Keeps the disappointment, awkwardness and time-wasting to a minimum if you can truly get a sense if you're even remotely on the same page about the music/approach before meeting/playing.

I'll get lucky again someday, just takes patience.

I had a positive experience on CL. Shortly after moving to Phoenix (not really a hotbed of surf music) I answered a CL ad for second guitar for a surf band, never having played surf before. While they were nice guys, it was apparent I was not what they were looking for, but I ended up being friends with the lead guitar player, Dusty Twangdude of The Drip Grinders, who suggested I try bass. Sold all my gear and bought an American Jazz and went to work on learning the basics, ala Jet Harris. Shortly thereafter saw another CL ad looking for a bass player for a "60's thing" that was forming. Feeling somewhat confident with the bass by now, I responded and was surprised that the audition list was mostly surf standards. After the audition I gave the standard "thanks for the opportunity, let me know what you think later" speech and was told I was in if I wanted. Been playing with the same guys now for over 15 months. Vintage gear, vintage tone. Otto & The Ottoman rock Phoenix.

I think there is a drift to Facebook for musician classifieds. CL musician listings now seem to be primarily some type of sketchy "producers" looking to scam "The Voice" wanna-bees out of cash or teenagers trying to find a ____-core band they can scream for.

Merhaba, agabey.
Since your band has an Ottoman theme, you might take style tips from these fine fellows:

But don't expect to play anywhere in Eastern Europe or curry much favor with Greeks in Phoenix, with a name like that!
