This may be my weirdest gig yet. I am playing uke at an art gallery for a Weird Al Puppet exhibit tomorrow (Fri, July 24) from 2:30-4:40pm. Word on the street is Weird Al may show up as he is in town tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

23 seconds of surf at today's show.

Cool! Weird Al was my first "concert". Three people started a moshpit during Smells Like Nirvana and security broke it up. Great memories.

Were you playing... Weird Al songs?

I played surf and jazz on the uke. Playing Weird Al music for Weird Al didn't seem right. Plus instrumentally, they lose their Weird Al-ness...

Man, you have to be one of a very special breed just to live in Halifax! I bet they appreciate hard-edged music there though. Here in tha Mudwust all they care about is Klassux Rawk and Blooze.

Squink Out!

Halifax is a mismash of a lot of styles, amd musicians. Hummers and strummers, Celtic, Blues, country, and metal seem to be the most common. We are lucky to have carved out our niche here. Everybody is pretty supportive of each other, and most know us (probably because we've been around forever).

The biggest problem is that the live music scene in the city is on a downturn with fewer venues supporting live music. Those that do have a lot of bands wanting in. Our most frequented venue is a a blues bar that seems to like us. Plus there are a lot of yhe blues players and fans that like surf.

Halifax ansd Nova Scotia has been good to us. Thanks for the kind words JObeast.

I was once offered a position in the town. My wife (a Georgian) would never go for it so that conversation died pretty quickly. I imagine it's beautiful there - and clean - but the weather must be really raw. And I would imagine that would breed a kind of aggressivity in the local music.
By analogy, First Nations radio stations I heard in Alberta played a kind of hard blues that sounds nothing like the BBQ good-times music popular in bourgeois 'joints' further south.

Squink Out!

Rev, I imagine Halifax has the weather to make my neck of the woods seem downright balmy at times. Thanks for your updates. Smile

I wonder sometimes if there are any HS kids out there, in band maybe, who simply want the chance to hit their drums loud and just play - and no screechy vocals to split expenses with (notice I didn't say income). Maybe I'll get the grand-daughter to act as agent provocateur.

Hey Rev-

Looking forward to playing with you guys at Bearly's!

Tom
The Del Boca Vistas

TeeJay ōjō

The weather up here can be pretty cold, but is generally -5C in the winter. Our coldest show was last February playing outdoors at -12C, but the pay was good None .Helped get us to Italy.

Wes, I think Wisconsin is way colder in the winter than Halifax.

JOBeast- I think you and your wife would like it up here. There is more of a Nova Scotia Blues style based in a Boogie Woogie, 1950s style.

Rev

TeeJay- looking forward to hearing the Del Boca Vistas live!
