I tried to find the meaning of “Cojonudo” by using Google translate, but nothing came up. I assumed it meant “with nudity” as Lorenzo lets it all hang out on the album cover. The production, too, is naked. No fluff, just reverb on the guitars and a warm room sound give ambience to the backing combo. I also plugged “Cojonudo” into the Urban Dictionary, which says the word is slang meaning “brilliant, awesome, cool.” And this album is all that, too.
The first four songs are studio cut originals, with a very clean sound, just a ghost of rhythm guitar filling out the sound behind Lorenzo's trio. Lorenzo knows the importance of the space between the notes, and ”Hang In There” is a well written slow burner that will surely end up being a crowd favorites. “Jaguar” is a love song to his guitar, and is the perfect advertisement for that Fender sound.
The next 12 songs are live recordings from a Surfer Joe gig in Brighton, with the same trio as on the studio recordings. There’s very little crowd noise and vocal patter, and is really well recorded (by Django Deadman), so it comes across as an intimate session. Drummer Gianni Apicella must have a jazz background as he has subtle swing while still pushing the beat. This jazziness reminds me so much of the early surf music style, light but heavy at the same time. In fact, this album should have come out on Blue Note– the late night swing and ambience would fit right in with their catalog. Some of these songs— “Fire Escape Rope”, “The North Swell” now have a familiarity that will lead them to become standards. The band is crack on throughout the set.
You get the best of both worlds on “El Sonido Cojonudo”, a great 4 song EP of new recordings, and a great sound live recording. I'm diggin' it!
