Is this possible, and if so, what sort of configuration? In this, I have my Crate PowerBlock for amplification, and in a few cases, I'll be able to get away with going DI through my Line 6 Guitar POD 2.0. Based on what I've read in the Gear forum, my initial pedal selections will be: Danelectro Spring King Reverb; Danelectro Reel Echo; Carl Martin Surf Trem; Carl Martin Crush Zone.
With my POD2.0, I'm mostly playing on Line 6 Clean (Amp Models) and Bypass (Effects), with the Reverb turned all the way, and I'll occasionally do some noodling with the Chorus 1 (Effects) setting. For as much as I've tried Tremolo and Delay (Effects), I can't seem to get the Effect Tweak set just right, to suit what I'm wanting from those effects. Of course I'm looking to go with the Danelectro Spring King, at least for home recording, 'cause no matter how much I shake, rattle, rock or kick the POD, I'm not gonna get a reverb crash out of it...with the Dano pedal, I'll know the kick pad's there, should I feel so inclined during song creation.
Before I do buy any pedals, and which is a good thing my POD 2.0 will get me by for several songs, I'll be buying a Fostex MR8HD (or maybe even the MR8 mkII), and I still plan to use one of my PCs with Sony ACID Music Studio (until I can afford to upgrade to ACID Pro) in the process of eventually sending music to a CD. Is it possible to put the pedals between the Guitar POD 2.0 and the Fostex, with the POD set to Line 6 Clean (Amp Models)/Bypass (Effects)/Reverb set to 0?

You won't be able to go from the pedal direct to a recording interface. For that you'll need something with line-level output. The Pod has it. The Crate has it. The Pod is better from my experience (set the amp model to 'Jazz Clean' and the EQs at 12 o'clock for a more neutral preamp).
However, there are lots of DI boxes out there for way cheap. That's really the way to go; you don't want to color your tone at all. Choose one with USB or Firewire output and good quality A/D convertors. But even those can be pretty cheap, e.g., less than $30. Essentially it will cost you less than the XLR-to-mini phone cable you'll need to use the Crate's line out.

Guitar pedals dont give a line output level so you cant use line input on the Fostex - you'd have to use the guitar/mic input which is probably a recipe for noise. Can't see any problem with using the pedals before the POD input as you are using a clean sound anyway (no good at all if you were using any distorion on the pod as it would distort the FX) then take the line out from the POD to the Fostex. Or you could just use the pedals into the Crate. The Line out on the CRATE is balanced XLR & does work pretty well - it has speaker emulation EQ and a variable output level. You can use an ordinary MIC lead from the CRATE to the MR8 s XLR input if you turn the gain down to line. I have a Powerblock and used to have an MR8...

A bit of a DUH for me, there. Otherwise, I think I've got a pretty good handle on what I need to get going, although since I'll likely be using the POD for going DI to the recorder, I'll have to see if I really need the Bass EQ turned all the way to 10. I really do love a LOT of bass, on every amp I've ever played through, and probably from having initially started my guitar collection with a bass. If anything, I could always add more bass after the fact (of laying down a track).
As this year goes along, I'll likely go for a Tech21 SansAmp Bass DI box. I don't see myself needing much in the way of bass effects, although if I can manage to find a used Line 6 Bass POD (before the Bass PODxt, with an interface more similar to my Guitar POD 2.0) I'll go for it. I'd tried out one of those (at Guitar Center) before they went out of production, and was sufficiently impressed with the possibilities.
I'll eventually add a MIDI keyboard and drum machine to my home recording studio lineup, and I'll eventually manage to get an albums worth of original surf/surfabilly tunes recorded. I may have to push back my Christmas album a la surf guitar ideal back to next year, but at least by the end of this year I'll have several songs "beat" into the "shape" that I want them.
